Question for the trappers

Recommended Posts

To all the trappers on this site, I have a single, simple question for you. After you skin the animals you have trapped, what do you do with the meat: eat, use for something else, or toss? I'm not knocking what you do, it's just something I've always was curious about. Thanks!

Everyone's situation is different, depending where they are. Usually sold the muskrat to the organizations that would put on the muskrat dinners down this way, but sadly that is fading away. Then I would have others on a list that would want the coon, opossum, beaver, and any extra muskrats.  K9's as already stated back to nature. Some trappers that make there own lures or baits may use some meat for that etc.

Muskrat and beaver get used for bait, actually my fox do also sort of. I put the fox carcass where I trap. Other fox won't eat them but the sent draws others to the area. Mink I save glands for lure, nothing will touch a coyote or otter

Everything goes into a bait for other furbearers. I take glands and anything else I can use and make my own lures. I don't waste anything.

I have not trapped in the last 50 + years however way back when I was a young man trapping in NJ, I was getting $1. 00 a pound for whole coon unskinned. That was good money back in the 60's. How many of you old guys remember that.

there is a market for the meats if you can find someone to buy them, rats and coon anyway, there is also a market for the skulls, teeth, claws.pecker bones and glands. If I'm eating them its only the rats and beaver.

When the zombies come I will eat them, until then I will keep using them for bait
