(Ford Wins) Lets talk PU trucks - 1500 series, 6cyl, Ford vs Chevy vs Ram

Have not owned a pickup since my 1986 Nissan 4x4 4cyl...      Thinking of selling my 2011 Grand Cherokee Ltd, and getting a 2016 1500 series / size PU, 6 cyl, crew cab , something pre-owned but low miles. 

I like the Chevy Silverados I think the best, but really have not driven or looked at anything -  just basing it on what I see on the highway. 

I don't tow a heavy boat - 15' polar kraft, and a 8ft utility quad with a Can Am 650 Quad.    The latter probably being the most weight I need to tow. 

I want to be able to seat 4-5 passengers and also have the extra room behind seat to pack stuff and keep it dry.  Not interested in a cover for the bed.  The bed will be for deer, or anything that can get wet.  Probably will put a fishing  rod rack back there as well. 

Can I hear some honest feedback on the 3 major US brands?

If someone can make a good case for a Toyota in the same size - I am all ears.

I can’t chime in because of 6cyl but I’ve had several Rams no real issues . Everyone one has their favorite but in all honesty no issues . I have Crew Cab now but owned a quad cab  previously. It was adequate for younger riders and short trips , crew cab definitely more comfortable and can be packed with a 65 quart cooler ,bow and duffle full of attire if traveling solo.

Best case for Toyota/Nissan is that they run forever and don't fall to pieces or nickel and dime you when they hit 100k miles

Is this going to be a daily driver?  How long do you plan on owning it?

I think it's more personal preference than anything.  I have a couple of F150's, one with over 210000 and one with 80000.  Both are 8 cyl and no issues.

I have had Doge Ram and had many issues so I switched, but they are supposed to be the truck of the year.  Never had a Chevy or Toyota.

I've owned a bunch of Fords and never had any major issue with them. I currently own a Dodge and lets just say my next truck will not be a Dodge.

I owned over the years all but one of the major brands (RAM), the worst was Chevy from manufacturer to dealer very unprofessional even under NJ lemon law they still tried to supersede the law until I contacted NJ LEMON LAW DIVISION. Ford it just had way to many recalls, Nissan and Toyota had simple recalls like floor mats....now with retirement in nearly 2.5 years I will treat myself to a new truck, either Toyota Tacoma or if I go full size then it will be the RAM, but most likely it will be the Tacoma

I really like my 2018 ram 1500 6cyl.  Getting between 20-21mpg, mostly around town.  It's also my first automatic.  I had a lot of truck with my f250 diesel, and a lot of problems.  Less is better.  Only truck that drove smoother was my gmc sierra, but that was 2 wheel drive.  Chevy is expensive for a truck.  They all are actually, but I found rams to be lower priced and just as good. That is if you're not looking for a lot of bells and whistles.

The newer f150 with the 6 eco boost is awesome if you don’t tow heavy the 2.7 is great we get around 25 mpg fully loaded with gear going hunting out to ohio.

Currently have 2 dodge pick ups . By far the most reliable trucks I have owned and I have had them all.

My daily driver is a 2008 with 315000 thousand on it.and it runs as good today as the day I bought it.

Second truck is a 2012 with 69000 on it. It's never been in the shop.

2008 has only been in shop for minor stuff a few times.

 

Both are Bighorns which have a posi rear.

Cant tell you how many other trucks I have pulled out of snow covered fields. 

Wouldn't ever buy another 4X4 that didn't have the posi rear. 

Truck goes from 8 cyl to 4 cyl on highway so gets decent gas mileage.

Jack, just curious why you want to stick with the 6 over an 8?  Just to save gas, better mileage?

I see a good deal on a 6cy Bighorn...   I would imagine that gets decent gas mileage.   What you think of a 6?

You're going to get a shit load of different answers. Everyone thinks the truck they drive is the "best.." You're best bet would be to test drive a few brands, and see what you like the most. I have only owned Ford trucks (2002 Ranger, 2010 F150, and currently a 2018 F150) and I'll probably never drive anything else. I have had great luck with all my trucks. ZERO major issues.. the Ranger had over 200k when I got rid of it. The 2010 F150 had almost 200k. My cuz just got rid of a 2005 F150 with over 300k. Do your research, test drive different brands, and you'll know when you find the right truck for you.
