Yet another one of my weird stories. It is amazing how this kind of thing always happens to me.

I went out just by myself to Winslow WMA in the late morning. I really didn't think I would find any birds, but I need the exercise so I thought it would be a nice walk in the woods. I walked around for about an hour, and didn't find anything. So I decided to leave.

I get back to the truck, I unload and case up the shotgun, take off my hat and coat and shove everything in the cab of the truck, start the truck and get ready to put it in reverse. Look behind my shoulder as I get ready to back up and.... yeaup... I swear not 40 yards behind my truck is this black cock bird on the dirt road looking at me. :o DAMMIT! Let the Chinese fire drill commence! As fast as I could, I shut the truck off and rushed to put on my hat/coat, uncase the gun, grab whatever shells I could find in my bag and load... I look up again, he's gone! He can't have gone far. I get over to where I saw him last and I can't find him. I start walking through some brush and when I look through the trees, there's this bird running as fast as his little legs can take him. I took the safety off but I couldn't get a shot before he disappeared in some thick stuff. You win little guy, you win.  But in the end, you  know you are getting eaten by an owl tonight anyway.

I packed up for a second time and left for home. :whatever:

We had that something similar happen when we were younger. We hunt all day and are done. We pack up get in the car and there’s a bird standing there. We stop the truck unpack work the area and no bird to be found. So we repack the truck get in, start it up and there is the bird. So we rework the area no bird. So I made my brother lie down in the grass I started the truck the bird materialized. My brother shot the bird and  we took it for a ride with us lol

I remember one Thanksgiving my brother shot a nice cock bird really early put it in his vest and we worked the whole area. Get done around noon my brother drops his vest on the tailgate and pulls the bird out. Bird pops his head up looks at us both, blinks and takes off. All we could do was laugh

One day last week my GSP is locked up solid on the edge of a field her nose into a clump of dry grass.  I don't see anything so I bend forward nudging the clump with my foot when a hen bird goes out from that clump hitting my leg taking off behind me as I'm somewhat bent over. Tried standing up turning around and shouldering the gun but it was gone. I will remember that bird more than the ones shot.

I thought, growing old would take longer !

I spent most of my money on shotguns and fly rods.  The rest I just wasted.

ROOKIE MISTAKE!   He would have been fine if you just pulled out... Went down the road, re-geared up and came back ready to kill.   In fact - better to have just pulled off the road and stalked your way back.

After pheasant hunting all day long and not seeing a bird, I go to sit down on a patch of grass and all of a sudden, a cock bird takes off after I put my gin down. I just laughed.

It all makes sense now - the PALMANATOR will die of old age!
