During the shotgun week we have a group of 8 at the house, but in the area I hunt it's just me and a good friend, the rest of the group hunts maybe 2 miles away. This group are very good guys, will do anything to help out, not lazy at camp, but they are very much mis-informed, lazy hunters. We always discuss shotguns at camp, I try in earnest to explaine the benefits of a slug barrel weather it's smoothbore or rifled, versus say a 26" or 28" field barrel, they don't understand the concept. They all hunt with a field barrles with a quality firearm with a drilled and tap reciever with a quality glass. Anyway a few years ago one of these guys hit a bear, poor shot......yesterday at 4:15pm the same guy was hunting not far from my spot, he shot a bear (small he said) the bear rolled up into a ball then took off......they found no blood, no hair..... I told them the bear is hit, they don't roll up into a ball cause they fell like it, but being the great hunters they are they didn't want to listen to me. But my good friend who hunts with me all the time did believe me and talked the shooter to go and look, they found blood and are tracking it now. We all owe it to the game to look for hit game !!!

We all owe it to the game to look for hit game

I dont know if i owe the "game" anything but, for 1 i owe it to my self to try and collect my harvest and 2, i owe it to the wild life managers so they can do their job properly.... Just sayin.. :cupcoffee:

I would think we "owe" the game our best effort because without the game we won't get to hunt. Also I would think that wounding losses are figured into harvest status when limits are set.

Aside from that, BHC I think sometimes guys shoot first and think second, then realize that perhaps they did not really want to shoot that animal because it dawns on them they rushed it, the animal is smaller than they thought and have regrets or whatever other thought that prompts them to discount the animal.

All we can really do is offer our advise and encouragement,  and use peer pressure when applicable... Sometimes it works and the light bulb turns on and at times  there just is no flicker at all... Good luck on the tracking.

Wow, hate to hear about game loss... maybe next year when you guys get together and if have the ability to shoot together, turn it into a bit of a target session to address any issue before the hunt.

We did that two years ago

That's a shame they didn't find if. Tough spot with friends and what you described. I like BTEs idea too, good approach! Maybe even have a friendly competition at the range to provoke the session happening!

What was their explanation for not getting rifled slug barrel?

Hell, I'll sell them my h&r 12 ga with bull barrel.

They see no reason to spend the $$$$ on the barrel since they hunt a few days during the shotgun season I can understand that, so told them either buy the Mossberg 500 combo or a H&R, plus they refuse to understand the benefits of a slug barrel be it smoothbore or rifled.....But the shotguns they use are quality with a quality glass.....To each their own !!!  Also they laugh about the 20ga, they have no idea !!!!
