Bow sling and broadhead safety

I wrote over the weekend that I went hunting solo in the Gap this weekend.  What I didn't write was that I had an arrow fall out of my quiver and I lost it.

I didn't give it a whole lot of thought until I heard a podcast by Corey Jacobson multiple time world elk calling champion showing what happened to his friend Dave Brinker when the same thing happened earlier this year in the Rocky Mountains but he got a broadhead through his calf.

I see that Sitka makes a sling that has a fletching cover which would reduce the likeliness of the arrow falling out of the quiver completely and possibly causing such a serious injury.  But as all things Sitka it is expensive $90 vs. most slings in the $30-$45 but they don't have a fletching cover so add another $10 and then either sewing it yourself with some para cord to the sling or the added cost of bringing it to a trailer.

My question is for those that have a bow sling what are using and how has it performed?  I have one caveat. I shoot bows that are 36 - 39 inches ATA and most slings say 34" or shorter.  I believe the Primos goes to 40" and one of the Cabelas says it does too.

Here's a link to the picture of Dave Brinkers injury.

I make all of my own bow slings. Most NJ deer hunters don't and never used one before, but if you are on a hunt out West it is a must. I buy 2" wide flat Elastic material and then I sew loops on either end to fit my cams. Slips on slips off.

I personally have only seen one of my friends with a sling and have never run into anyone while hunting public land with one but it is worth a shot to ask.  I seen ones like you have made but after what happened with me and seeing what could have happened I want one  and have a cover for the fletching.

I hold my bow in my hand.  Unless you're hiking 5+ miles to your stand or on an elk or goat hunt somewhere, I think slings are a bit unnecessary

I hold my bow in my hand and did this past weekend and that didn't stop the arrow from being dislodged from the quiver so I am looking for a safer way to carry it.

What quiver are you using?

Alpine SoftLoc.  Only time I have ever had an issue with an arrow popping out is if I lowered it too fast and the arrow caught brush at the bottom.  Also when I carry the bow I typically carry it almost cradled like a rifle so that the bow is across my chest and the quiver is well above most brush that can grab the arrow.

After this I think I am also going to replace it possibly with a Trophy Taker Vice, a G5 Head Loc or a CBE quiver.

Gotcha.  I don't have experience with any of those, so I can't give an opinion.  Sorry.  I currently use a PSE Raven quiver and have never had an issue with arrows coming loose.  I also remove the foam from my quivers because it will dull the blades of fixed heads.

Primos sling

USE G5 head lock which has two arrow holding points

Also use the Trophy Ridge Hex Light. Two arrow shaft holding points as well.

Both sold at the store.

I picked up the G5 quiver.

My trusty old Kwikee wouldn't securely hold fmj arrows.

The G5 will! It actually holds arrows too securely.

There is no issues with clearance if the quiver is mounted higher on the bow.

I use the Kwikee quiver arm mount to raise my arrows above the bottom cam.

You made a great choice. I have this quiver.

Yes it will break in.

Bought this because my buddy Bob and his brother Ralph use it on stalks. Arrows very secure with two points of hold.

I ended up buying the G5 Headloc Quiver. I also own the kwikee quiver hi rise that you do but haven’t tried it on this bow. So far I am extremely happy with the quiver and if anything it holds the arrow too hard. I am sure it will loosen up some with use.
