Pictured is my first deer knife. My dad got it for me in 1974 at Paladini”s  general store at foot of Kittatinny mountains by Fairview lake, way back I the day when u could drive up to Blue Mtn Lake and Crater lake from the East side of the mountain. Its a “Western”. I can’t even tell you how many deer it’s gutted but I can say I have never found a knife I could get as sharp. Sharper than I can even get a broadhead and I get my VPAs scary sharp. It’s usually good for about two deer before I have to re-sharpen.  I have a Case folding hunter that is more difficult to sharpen but it’s a bit thicker and harder steel but can get it close. Then there is my dads original Buck folding hunter. Steel so hard I just can’t come close to getting it as sharp as the other two. I used the old western on my 2018 doe and bucks and just resharpened it on a Henkels steel and leather strop. I don't think I have ever seen a sharper knife. But - one or two deer and I got to do it again. It only takes a few minutes but the steel is soft. What do you prefer???  I think I prefer the softer steel like this knife. Plus - how classic is this?

I have a Case folding knife.  Model is Mako.  Sharpens easily and stays sharp.  Love it.

My case folding knife has a hammerhead shark on it - that's gutted a bunch as well, basically been that or the one my dad got me I don't use his buck knife although I probably will someday. Part of me wants to get something new with a gut hook on it but the nostalgia is overpowering....

Beautiful knives fellas. My personal favorite is the Cabelas Alaskan Vanguard knife, which is really a buck knife. It's a fix blade thats got the gut hook on the back and a small serrated section at the bottom of the blade which is perfect for cutting the windpipe. Handle is hard rubber, and it washes off nice and easy.

I use the same knife. My uncle gave it to me when I started hunting and I’m still using it 30 years later. I also bought each of my sons one and gave it to them the day they passed their hunting test. I love the old “Made in the USA” Schrade knives.

I have about a zillion knives. There isn't a knife made that can gut as many deer as a Cutco double D grind WITHOUT ever being sharpened. I have one that has done hundreds and should be sent back for its first time touch up.

I now have three, one in each  of my packs, they just don't dull due to their design, and I cut through the rib cage when I gut everything except Bucks I will get mounted.. with these I will never need to buy another gutting knife.

By far the SHARPEST knife I have ever used was  a Chris Reeves.

They are so sharp the blade just needs to be close to what you want to cut. Scary sharp is an understatement.

I will occasionally use my first  knife a Shrade I have has since 1970 or my fathers original buck knife . But that's just totally setimental

I'm in the market for a new knife right now.  I haven't decided on a maker in particular and I'm not super happy about having to wait a couple years to get one.  It is what it is though.

I might go to the NY Custom Knife Show in Jersey City next month and just buy something already made if it catches my eye.
