Ground Blind Recommendations

OMC

Recommended Posts

I normally only hunt from treestands but looking to get more portable this year for the rut. I have climbers but they are heavy and most of the spots I am looking at are a good hike in so I think a pop up blind may be the way to go. Any suggestions ?  I am looking at the Ameristep Dog house but the reviews don't look to good.  Thanks

Doghouse blinds are no good for archery (at least for me). When I'm at full draw, my arm hits the wall of the blind, and the movement that causes will spook deer. I only use doghouse blinds when I'm using shotgun (mainly during turkey season).

I have a couple of those nice four-walled hub blinds and since they are bigger I can go full draw without hitting the walls.

Find one that comes with a really good carry case if you plan on hiking in a good distance.

The ones with the velcro are annoying when you want to be quite - I have one that has "curtains" that you can slide open and close the windows without making noise with velcro. Its this one --> Muddy VS 360

If you practice with these hub blinds, you can usually put it up in just a few minutes.

Yep its all public land areas. Walk in setup hunt pack up and leave hopefully dragging one with me.  Like I said mostly did it with climbers but getting tired of sweating my ass off carrying that in.

Sometimes a new blind will spook deer. Its better to put it up, blend it in to the background and leave it. I would suggest making or finding a natural blind on public land.No one will steal a pile of branches or a dead log. lol

It's a real crap shoot leaving a pop up blind on public land. So many ass h***S out there stealing. If you feel secure in the spot that no one will come screw with it I'd leave one out, brush it in and keep my fingers crossed. There are no guarantees that it won't be stolen in the NJ woods. I do agree with Mazzgolf in that the blind needs to be big enough for you to draw your bow. The Dog House is a bit small.

Probably the best thing to do is build natural blinds. I've done it for years and have never had one stolen.   Best time to build one is well before the season starts though.

Good luck!

+1 I just did that over the weekend on a WMA. I found a spot that I might not want to bring a climber to. So I found some blowdowns, cleared out a spot where I can sit, and I'll just hunt there. That way, I don't leave anything in the woods for thieves to take. (OK, OK, I couldn't help myself - I put up a trail camera there - I'm fulling prepared for it to get stolen, though )

That said, you can put up a hub blind and shove it in some bushes to quickly hide it to keep from spooking deer.  I definitely never would leave a nice hub blind out on public land.

Guys you are missing the point. It is to be mobile if I had one or even two spots I would place a stand there. I personally do not like hunting from the ground.  I understand that the deer may notice something is out of place but its better than disturbing an area making a blind for a quick hunt.  This not my go to spot just a way to poke around.

Deer will more than likely make you if you pop up a blind the first day. If you are going in to leave it they will be fine with it after a couple days. I would recommend making natural ground blinds that you can go to or maybe one of those ghost blinds that reflects your surrondings. I will bet popping a blind up on the same day unless it is really hid well, will not be to your advantage. Hope this helps.

SS!

That's what I do on my Club property. I'll observe where the deer are during the season, find a spot to set up, bring in a cushion and field pod. Put up natural or camo coverings in front of me. Have killed many deer that way.  The only drawback is rain. A real blind will protect you.

Ok this isn't going the way I wanted it to go just looking for recommendations on different blinds .  I appreciate all the what not to dos but not want I was asking.   Fireguy thanks for the offer but I just picked one up with a chair.  Its nice and small so I can poke around and check some areas.
