Todays Hunt

  Headed out to the woods this afternoon at about  3:30.. Got to my spot and decided to move it 20 yards or so deeper in the woods so i could be a little closer to a buck scrape i found the other day..  Poured a couple drops of wildlife special golden estrus in the scrape then proceeded to climb my tree.. Only got up about 15 feet feet before i ran into a limb on the back side of the tree.. i didnt see it from the ground..   ... Didnt have my hatchet with me and it was to late to go fetch it so i just said what the heck, i'll just have to be extra still... Used the grunt tube for about 45 minutes then stopped.. It was about time for the does to show up so i would just wait and see if a buck is hot on their trail... And there was... About 20 minutes after i stopped with the grunt tube the first of several does showed up.. Browsed around then stopped for almost 5 minutes at the base of my tree.. why?.. beats me.. But i think she was checking out my cig butts. Thats the only thing that was down there.  ..Anyway, a couple more does followed and they all pretty much did the same thing.. They passed and after a few minutes they came back by.. Had every opportunity to wack one and went so far as to draw and place a bead on ones chest,  but the day was still to early.. I'm buck hunting i kept telling myself..  Anyway, the does left and the woods went quiet.. Had to take a piss so i whipped out the ol' johnson and let'ter pour..  .. A few minutes later another pair of bigger does came in from behind.. Again they checked out whatever was at the base of my  tree before moving on...this time it may have been my piss they were checking out i dunno..  So a few minutes had passed when one of the does came barreling back to my spot, right behind her was a thick necked big bodied 6 pointer.. I saw them coming so i had plenty of time to draw.. The buck stopped about 30 yards to my right then walked over to my tree and was checking out the spot where i pissed.. At that point he was almost directly under my stand. He looked up and stared right at me at full draw a couple times but didnt seem alarmed.. I didnt flinch a muscle and my face was covered.. He had no clue what i was..   He meandered around for a bit, before walking over to checked out his scrape,  and gave me dozens of good shot opportunities.. But i was fighting a battle in my head and couldnt pull the trigger.. He was a nice sized deer and i've been dying to put the new Hoyt compound to work, But it was still to early in the rut season and bigger bucks are in the area.. What should i do?..  well, Bigger bucks in the area eventually won out..   And i was glad i reached a decision cause my arm was gettin pretty tired... Eh, but anyway now its dark and the buck is still close by.. and so were the does, and so were alot of other things i couldnt see.. There was commotion going on all around me.. After about a half hour i said "F" it i'm getting down.. Climbed down and left... Below is a trail pic of the buck that showed up today...

Sounds like you put self in the right spot. As far as the butts go I take a half a bottle of water n put my butts out in it . Just cause the doe n a young buck were checking them out. Might keep the wise ol guy away. My next hunt I'll be try'n the ecig . Then try'n to quit .

 .. good idea if you think your smoking is keeping the deer away.. As for me, it doesnt seem to matter.. However, i may give those e-cigs a try..  Less to carry in and requires less fidgeting which IMO is the worst possible thing you can do in a stand..

 

Went to the same spot this afternoon and sat til dark.. Nothin..

I have no trouble see'n deer when smoke'n . I actually killed my first buck (1 sided 3pointer) sit'n on a 5 gal bucket with a but in my mouth. Just want to improve my odds of see'n a big ol guy. I've been smoke'n for 37 yrs n think it's time to give them up before I can't get enuff breath to climb in my stand. lol

34 years for me and i'm starting to feel the effects.. Wont be long before i put them down for good.. Funny thing, I remember a long time ago when i swore up and down i'll quit if a pack ever goes over a dollar... lol.. Payin over $7.50 twice a day now...

I smoked for 31 years, on the way to an Illinois hunt 7 years ago this week, I quit because the guy I was with told me they did not allow any smoking in the camp, I threw on the patch, and never looked back. I gained 30 lbs since then, but best thing I ever did. You guys can do it to. The patch works when your ready. Good luck.

just a heads up Axiom. if you do try the e-cig , make sure you try it before you go in the woods. do not I repeat do not puff on that thing like you would a cig. it was like the first time I tried a smoke. I almost to choked to death .  I bought the Logic  full flavor was kinda like a black n mild cigar which I like. they also have light n menthol flavor type also.

  I've already tried the e-cigs and dam near choked to death also.. lol... I just didnt think about useing them in the woods... I'm going to pick one up on my way to the Stand today..

 

Yeah they do have a pretty good flavor.. Dont think i'd campare them to my Partagas limited reserves or Vista Reals though...lol
