Yeah they can. Killed a 3 1/2 year old tank in the pines in 2011. Dressed out at 175lbs looks like a horse hanging on the wall. How ever old he is good luck hunting him. If he is 5-6 take him because he will most likely start loosing antler size next season.

Sounds like your spot has way more nutrients . Never seen a deer that big in the pines in my 30 years of hunting. Congrats on a rare buck.

This is just my opinion, but, looking at his body and facial characteristics, I would guess him at 4.5. Having not hunted our NJ pine deer nearly as much as our Northern deer, I'm not as used to judging them, but I've seen some very tiny body older deer when I did hunt down that way.

He has some slope to his back and his belly sags a bit below his chest line. His brisket is pretty prominent and saggy and his neck is pretty thick even though it's not rut swollen yet. His nose is broadened like that of a buck thats at least 3.5 and he walks with the gait of a slightly older buck.

In any case, I think he's mature enough to definitely be a NJ shooter in my book and I love the character of his antlers. Put an arrow through him next time Rob!

GOOD LUCK!

“I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear
