A New Jersey Six I will call "Wide Guy" (Pics)

Just got the chance to post these photos of a nice New Jersey Six point I took. I believe him to be a 4.5 year old buck. I took him with a quartering away shot using a new Dead Ringer Rampage 100 grain three blade broadhead. Recorded on solo cam video. I took him through the liver and heart and he ran only about 60 yards before piling up. Needless to say, I am a very happy bow hunter!

Real wide! Congrats!

I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear

great buck!!!!

Why do you believe him to be 4.5 years old?   Did you have pics of him from prior years?

Honestly without knowing the back history to me he looks like a normal 2.5 year old farm country deer...

There a place you can send the jawbone out to and they will slice a teeth and get an exact age for you..

I believe him to be a 4.5 year old buck based on my 54 years of deer hunting experience coupled with the look of the deer. His body shape and size is a big determining factor along with the fact that in the areas I hunt here in New Jersey which I assure you are not farm country areas, I don't think you will see a deer with this kind of rack at 2.5 years old. Perhaps in other parts of the country you might see that kind of a rack at that age but it would be most unusual in northern New Jersey. In addition he has a grey old face and very big bases which you usually will not see on a 2.5 year old buck and he has a huge body. Lastly I made the educated guess of his age by observing him for weeks in trail camera photos and assessing his age based on body configuration. The age estimate is just my opinion. Regardless of the actual age of this buck II think most will agree he is a stud of a six pointer no matter how old he really is. I fell very lucky in being able to take a buck like this in Northern New Jersey.

For sure hes a great buck. that's why I asked if he was a farm deer or mountain deer.

Where I hunt in northern Clearfield county Pa we have vast woods and the bucks do get old. Every once in a while someone  gets one that will be say a 8point 17-18" spread and they will say its 5-6 yo...BUT the bases will be pencil thin...that's a younger deer!

We had one killed near us that was biologist aged at 10.5 years old. I believe that is the pa record for oldest recorded buck age of a wild deer.

We have young deer that have great mass sometimes too. Back when we could shoot spikes guys would get a 15" 6 point and swear it was 2.5-3.5" yo...Was it possible? sure but unlikely

Im not questioning anyones ability to age a deer I just like to know what characters of the deer make them believe what age it is.
