Less than $5K but you'll get some killer shots with it.  A nice "throwaway" camera instead of lugging your good gear out.   :P

I've trekked through the woods with my D700 and 24-70, and you have to be careful. Certainly not a camera I would lug around while hunting...I have enough gear as it is...but it's certainly doable for a hero shot if you pack out your gear and then go back in for the deer...or wait until you drag it out and stage a shoot somewhere. But to simplify, I tend to have a Sony P&S on hand all the time. Not sure how current P&S cameras are, but I always favored Sony sensors and image quality in the P&S realm going back a couple years.

The current iPhones (nor any current cell phone) will ever hold a candle to a digital camera made exclusively for that purpose. Perhaps in time technology will get there, but right now as you can see in the pics above...there is a huge gap in image quality.

I wasn't kidding about picking up the mid-level Canon gear.  It's less about the camera and more about the glass you're using.  The Canon photo I posted above was shot with an 11-year-old Canon EOS with a 6MP resolution.  Most phones have higher resolution CCDs in them than my camera, but I have a larger CCD and better glass.  The proof is in the shot.

On a side note, the reason I went with Canon was because of a buddy of mine from college.  I went to RIT, which is a decent photo school, and had a lot of friends who were photographers.  One of them relocated to NJ and has won tons of awards.  One time he came over the house to take some photos of the kids and drink my beer.  This was probably 9-10 years ago.  From out of his bag he pulled a Canon digital SLR all beaten to hell.  It still took great photos.  I asked him why Canon and not Nikon (seeing as he's a photojournalist), and he said it wasn't worth the extra money when they're essentially the same.  And for me, the prosumer, it wouldn't really make any difference because I'd be getting more camera than I knew what to do with.  So that convinced me to go with Canon, invest in Canon-compatible glass, and every decade retire a camera body and throw it into my hunting bag.  I can throw a $300 telephoto/zoom into my bag and leave the good camera back and glass at home.

I still carry my iPhone wherever I go to take pictures of UFOs, my buddy's dog, and my buddy when he's stupid drunk.  That's what the iPhone is good for: drunken photos, selflies, and helping you remember things when the beer wins.

Just a thought from another shooter.
