 You can only hunt black bears with a shotgun or a muzzle loader during 6 Day shotgun deer season in December with your $2 bear permit.  No bow season (yet) in NJ for bears.

We have to complete the initial 5 Year Comprehensive Black Bear Management Plan before they can make changes such as moving up the date like PA does, adding bow/crossbow, etc.  I can't recall if this is our 4th or 5th year coming up under the plan(?).  I think 4th year.  That would put the ownership on the Division and on the F&G Council to make an annual bear hunting season(s) moving forward. 

 

Personally, I'd like to see a split season where bow hunters get a portion of the permits during regular fall bow and the rest of the permits for a gun season moved up before 6 Day when most bears are still active and not in dens yet.  And I'd let hunters use bows in that gun season if you have a bow license like we can do with bucks during 6 Day.  That's just me.

My property seems to have good activity during the bow season.

I have yet to see one during the six day.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a bow season someday.
