Need some input!

Hey y'all! Okay, I retrieved the camera August 3, and while I was there, I made a natural blind, because i knew there were deer there, and planted a small food plot using seed that grows pretty quick (planting date for New Jersey starts August 1, as said on the bag). Three weeks ago, when I put the camera in, I put a Trophy Rock out, with Lucky Buck (apple scented powder), and Buck Jam altogether. When I got home from retrieving the camera, I saw that I had nice bucks, so I'm telling myself I should use a stand for these bucks, these bucks are SMART. I am going to use a nice Tree Walker climbing stand I just got. The Lucky Buck is gone, and so is the Buck Jam, but obviously the Trophy Rock lasts a while. The bucks were indeed licking the rock on the camera, but may not be their first choice out of those three. My question is, when is the next day I should go in there to pick a tree for the climber, and put more Lucky Buck Down and Buck Jam (they love all of it).? I am TERRIFIED of boogering those deer out of there. This spot by the way has hiker trails, and looks like people do walk around there, BUT I may be wrong. Wait a few weeks? One week? I just went in their yesterday, and really don't want to disturb the area that much! Thanks y'all! I know this is such a specific question, but I really want to do everything right, so I can intercept these nice deer, so I need input from my fellow hunters. Thanks so much y'all!

While much is written about staying out of your deer spots, the reality is that this is NJ whcih is the most densly populated state in the nation.  Deer are highly acustomed to being intruded upon by humans throughout each day.  Slip in quietly during the midday hours when deer are less likely to be on the move right now (summer).  Go in only on an as-needed basis.  And rest assured that the deer you are afraid to bump have seen 4 or 5 humans already just this morning.  If this were another state where trespass rules were followed and there were far fewer people around, it might be a different story.

Good luck this season!

Since there are hiking trails near the spot, the deer are going to be conditionded to a degree to some human activity/scent. Pattern the humans as to when they are using the trails if possible and use their activity to your benefit and access the spot for baiting, camera recon during the human activity and the deer may be more receptive to your intrusion. That is what I would do.

I would also add that if when you are in their area during a visit and the deer catch you, don't make eye contact with them, let them watch you. Don't act like a predator. Walk through as if you never saw them. My experiences in the past during scouting trips in the field is if you don't make eye contact, they don't feel as threatened as if you stare at them.

Hey great bucks & Good luck! I agree with what Bowtech says...you could go in next week but stay on the main hiking trails ...you should be good to go before opening day. Don't forget your eab...might want to hunt a different spot for your doe.

Btw....what's with all the y'all's in all your posts?

Treestands don't demand, treestands don't complain, treestands simply ask me to sit down and listen.

I'll third what BowTechExperience said. That is exactly how you should do it.

To further expand upon how well acting non-threatening works, I've actually killed a handful of deer by acting like I'm not a predator and could have killed more. If you haven't learned it already, deer avoid danger in the following manner:

IF they can avoid danger well before-hand, they just slip out of there.

If they think they can let danger slip by, they will freeze and not move. Holding tight as long as possible, until....

A) Danger is gone.

B )They have to bolt.

And I guess

C) They get shot by someone like BTE or me. lol

I also agree with what Cousin Brown said. Shoot your EAB somewhere else and do it quickly! Those bucks patterns might not stay the same too long after the season opens. Between changing food sources, bachelor groups breaking up and pressure, they might not offer these nice easy patterns for too long.

That's also not to say mess the spot up by hunting the wrong conditions. Try to look at it as ONE SHOT! Wait for the first best day to be there...then be there.

Finally I would add that all big bucks (all deer for that matter) have different "personalities" and some will allow a lot more human intrusion before they try to avoid an area while others may get bumped out of an area and not return for a long time.

Best of luck!

That's why I use the Jersey slang word.... YOU'S....

Like for instance;   Hey YOU'S guys going to shoot all those deer without me.....

IMO.... when I'm on a good buck....

I'll only make one or maybe two trips a week tops, Try and go mid-day and just go in straght to the feeding area do what you have to do and leave as quickly and quietly as possible...

As for stands, with a big buck I would put it in asap, so he is use to seeing it, if he doesn't frequent the area that offten  I'd still set up and leave the stand or blind there for at least a week before I'd actually head in to hunt him.... If you have a spot that is better suited for a pop up blind let me know and I lend you one kido....

BTW.... You know it's ok to text me with question Derek, I don't have a problem helping you kido....

Thanks a lot Paul! Much appreciated! What I did is set up a lock on early August, so the lock on is ready to go. All I have to do now, is just go in there here and there to put some Lucky Buck Mineral down, just to keep them coming.

Nomad, You got some great pointers there.

Also the idea of hitting your other spot for the baldy isn't a bad recommendation either.

Take your time and think everything though.
