BHC Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I don't hunt over bait cause where I hunt no baiting allowed, but 80 yds from my stand is private land and I have sole permission to do what I want but no hunting allowed, this is where I have my bait and cam out. Been putting bait out once per month since March, notice very little deer activity but plenty of bears. Been putting out a 33 lb block of corn and one trophy rock every month, going to leave it alone for the next 7 weeks and check it on or around September 1st hopefully with the corn block gone the deer will return in decent numbers, and hopefully that wide 8pt as well !!!! So for those in bear country and putting out bait I'm sure you know the bears will take over the bait
Axiom Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Ok, so let me get the straight... You can hunt on one property but you cant bait.. But on the next property over you can bait and do what ever you want except hunt.. correct?.. If so, what purpose does it serve to bait one spot you cant hunt, and not bait the spot your hunting?... Now dont get me wrong. Im not saying you should or shouldnt hunt over bait.. Just wondering why you would go thru the time and expense doing something that seems to accomplish nothing...
BHC Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 Cause I respect the rules of the landowner, and the deer don't understand where the private land and the public meet !!!!! Know the lands you hunt, you will know the deer movement as well.......please don't ask me questions on hunting nor try to give me your advice, cause you know next to nothing when it comes to hunting and related stuff........do the housework, smoke more cigarettes, build a bridge, and whatever else you do Rdfhunter 1

He has a legitimate question. Why WOULD you bait a piece of property that your don't have permission to hunt, any deer that are coming from that direction will stop at the bait and have no reason to continue to the area you are hunting.also you could reroute the deer to go around you,it really does seem senseless and a waste of time.If you know the lands and the deer movement so well, then why don't you just set up your cam(s) on a trail that you know they use?
BHC Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 I don't hunt small woods, or farms I hunt deep woods with little if any type of fields of corn, beans or whatever not easy to pattern the deer, just a general location the area they roam. I use bait for the cam to see what is roaming around, of course I get a few nice bucks before the season starts but never see them once the season opens, where they are I have a slight idea, on the land I can't hunt. Bears I get way too many, but like the bucks I don't see them during bear season, waste of time in your eyes not mine.

MarkMartinFan Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 So let's see,the deer are where you can't hunt and the bait is on land that you can't hunt, seems like a pretty open and shut case to me. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that the deer are coming from or going to the bait on the property he can't hunt but are passing his stand on the property he can hunt. Bucksnbows 1

How do you know they are? He said the he has a slight idea that the deer are on the land that he can't hunt,so why would he put bait on that piece to keep them there? Personally, I would stop baiting the land that I can't hunt and put a cam where I'm hunting to see what is actually coming through and at what times, but hey, that's just me.
BHC Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 Mark your ever so right. I said I have a slight idea the bigger bucks are on the private land, it's their bedding area and there is a water source plus the owner tells me what he sees on his lawn. of course come the rut I see at least one of the nice bucks either chasing or seeking a doe. Reason is I can't bait the land I hunt no baiting allowed, the bait/cam is 80 yds from my stand, I hunt from the same tree for the last 10 years
Axiom Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I have a solution to this problem... Seems the OP is making a bad situtation worse.. He puts bait where the deer are and leaves little incentive for them to go where he says they dont go anyway.. But like always, where there is a will there is a way and so i assessed the situation, improvised and came up with a strategy.. Below is a graphical illustration of my plan... You see, you bait the non hunting side and set up a deer stand on the hunting but no baiting side... The corn pile must be right near the border.. Sure, Some of the deer will chow down from the Non hunting property but others should venture over to the hunting side long enough to get a shot, especially if there is a crowd.. Now, there is a possibilty the older and wiser big buck as been down to the Tax assesors office and looked over the tax maps and knows not to cross that line but, who knows, maybe during the rut he'll be to fixated on distributing his DNA that he'll forget all about it... Gotta stay positive folks...
BHC Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) not breaking the law but we can't say the same about you, you admitted your an ex-con but I do love your picasso!!!! Edited July 20, 2013 by BHC
Bucksnbows Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 It makes sense to me to bait the one property you can legally even though you can't hunt it, but I would put my camera out on a trail leading to your bait that is closer to your tree stand. That said, getting deer used to bait takes a day at most, so IMO, I wouldn't waste lots of $$ on bait 2 months before early fall bow. As you know, you wind up just feeding the bears. So far, the only bear-proof bait I've found for deer is sugar beets. It takes northern NJ deer some time to figure them out, but once they begin eating them, they pound them. Bears show no interest or at least that has been my findings based on experiments I did last year. https://www.troutscapes.com/ https://nativefishcoalition.org/national-board
BowhunterNJ Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I'll just add two things here that are directly related to this topic... 1) Many guys hunt off the bait and intercept the deer coming from and going to it. Not a bad strategy at all to help keep your stand location and presence less detected by the deer (i.e. busting them coming in, or getting pinned in the tree coming out). 2) That picture is HILARIOUS!
joe987654321 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 2) That picture is HILARIOUS! I totally agree. It looks as if Axiom read the Iowa posting before sketching the pic. Notice how he placed Joe only 5 feet high instead of 35 to 40 and included a foam seat.
