This was a nice article from back in June on Hunters Helping the Hungry here in NJ, and with a nice mention of the events that have helped raise funds to keep the program going, including the one by Black Knight Bowbenders (Bowhunter444's club).

“We need to fight for our Second Amendment freedom for many reasons, but today we fight for it to help those not as fortunate as most in our great state,” Mark Charbonneau of Clinton Township told a record number of shooters at Hunters Helping the Hungry’s seventh annual Clay Bird Shoot at Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Sporting Clays in May.

HHH is a New Jersey organization that is particularly strong in Hunterdon County. Deer hunters donate their kills to HHH, which then pays butchering fees so the meat can be distributed to food banks.

The Clay Bird Shoot raised more than $5,000 with the help of participants, donors, clubs and sponsorships from retailers the Heritage Guild, Sportsman’s Rendezvous, The Owl’s Nest, Strictly Archery, Cabelas, FFL dealer Jim Flynn, Behre Bait and Tackle, and the event host Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays.

“We can’t thank those who sponsor us enough,” said HHH trustee Joe Schultz of Lebanon. “Every year our prizes get bigger and better from our sponsors and Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays can’t do enough to make an event of this capacity run so smoothly.”

Here are other recent May fundraisers for HHH:

— The annual striper fishing trip aboard the MiJo off Atlantic Highlands. The Fisherman magazine editor Chris Lido once again beamed upon learning from trip organizer Keith Griglak that $1,000 was raised for processing venison this coming hunting season. “After seeing the devastation of Hurricane Sandy along the Jersey Shore last year, having 25 fisherman reel in 22 stripers, including two that weighed close to 20 pounds is very encouraging” said Lido. Local sportsmen Eric Turnquist of Lebanon and Joe Griglak of Bound Brook both took in fish just shy of 20 pounds each.

— The Black Knight Bowbenders Club in Jackson had 60 archers at its 3D bow shoot and raised $1,065 for Hunters Helping the Hungry and collected over 200 pounds of non-perishable food. HHH trustee and co-chair Bud Thomas said, “Venison is a highly sought-after meal at our distribution channels across the state, and after this event we were able to immediately put foods into the Monmouth and Ocean Food Banks.”

— A celebration of the life of the late John McMahon of Riverdale raised $2,200. McMahon, a lifelong New Jersey hunter, USMC veteran and HHH supporter, McMahon passed away turkey hunting less than two years ago. His children, Karen McMahon Coussoulis and Lauren and Ryan McMahon donated the celebration’s proceeds to HHH because they knew he supported its cause.

— North Hunterdon High School freshman Nicole and Alyssa Cardenas of Asbury came up with an idea to raise money for HHH while earning six service hours each to fulfill their community service requirement at North. On May 25 the twin girls donned Hunters Helping the Hungry T-shirts and finished the Spring Lake 5-mile run collecting $540.

“May was a banner month for HHH” said trustee and founder Les Giese of Clinton Township. “We are well prepared to support the hunters this upcoming deer season.” Last year, HHH distributed over 27,000 pounds of processed venison which brings the total to over 1.4 million meals since the program began.

Looking ahead, The Heritage Guild in Branchburg will be hosting the grand opening of its outdoor bow range July 26-28. HHH will be on hand at this event selling T shirts and more. The last fundraiser of the year will be the Fall Clay Bird Shoot at Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays on Oct. 27. For details, log on to huntershelpingthehungry.org.
