When I was in highschool I used to do exactly what they does minus the timer with sewing thread. I would go in the afternoon after school and set sewing thread across every trail I could find along the hiking paths, then check them in the morning before school. You could tell by the direction the thread broke and got carried how the deer were moving. Then I'd reset them and check again after school. So I could see their morning and midday movements, as well as their night time movements to get an idea of where they were bedding vs feeding. Even though I didn't have exact times I had a general idea. Pretty inexpensive way to do it, but required a fair amount of time (which I no longer have and with the advent of trailcams is unnecessary). Pretty cool though, that picture brought back some memories!
