So far this summer is shaping up to look like the summer of 2011 when we had good flows and cool temps that allowed us to fish all but maybe 2 weeks that summer and safely practice C&R with our trout.  Last summer was the polar opposite with hot temps and low flows and we were done before the end of May and didn't fish for trout again until late August with another hot spell in early September.

As soon as these flows abate, get out and fish!  Tonight's low temps in the headwaters of the South Branch and Musky will be a low 49 degrees!  Highs during the daytime coming up won't climb out of the 70s, so we're in great shape.  Our hatches have slowed significantly, but we still have bugs around on some days and nearly always late in the evenings.  One our trico mayflies start, early morning fishing will be the ticket for a few months.

I was thinking the same thing, this spring has been pretty unreal weather wise, but a great thing for the rivers and lakes given all the rain!

I'm hoping to get out and hit the rivers once they settle down a little

The high flows we're seeing will be with us for a few days.  More if we get T-storms over the next week as predicted.  The phenomenal year class of wild trout born over the winter of '11/'12 when we had good flows in fall to get trout into their spawning tributaries and a warm, snow-less winter which helped hatch eggs early was largely offset by last summer's heat and low flows (low flows allow a lot of predation on trout and heat obviously kills them).  Let's hope we get some good water temps and flows all of this year as has been more or less the case so far.  That will also help holdover the stocked fish and not just our wild trout.

The long range forecast shows consistent rain patterns and slightly lower than average temps, so the trout should be happy well into the summer.

From your lips to God's ears

I just postponed several guided trips for our Shannon's Fly Shop guides until our streams fall to fishable levels.  The South Branch may be OK later tomorrow or by Sunday if these T-storms stop.  But there's no way I'm complaining!!!

If anyone can hit the Flat Brook Sunday evening, I'm thinking the wife and kid owe me one for Father's Day.  Just PM me here for a meet up.  Flow dependent, of course.
