My brother Andy and I scouted a piece of public land we had never stepped foot on until today.

Since we killed a few birds out of the other piece, I didn't want to kill the last vocal bird in there. I think guys must have got a few of the jakes out of there too because there were a few that were roosting with this bird and I haven't heard them since Friday of A week. I went and heard the one gobbler in that spot again tonight too, he's still alive and I don't have any intentions of killing him. So on to the new spot. At first it didn't look too great, but as we got deeper in, we started finding prints, possible roosts, started to look good. Covered as much ground as we could and then went home.

My other brother, Greg and I split up tonight to roost the brand new spot. We each heard a single bird. Great! But I won't be able to hunt until Tuesday morning and he doesn't have time to turkey hunt between work and fishing tournaments.. Hopefully we can hear them again this week and maybe Jon can put an arrow in one.

I feel lucky and blessed this year. Last year I missed the entire turkey season laying in the hospital. Worst Spring ever. This year I don't think I've gone a single night without hearing birds on the roost in at least one spot. Some people think it's silly that I can get so excited about a wierd noise that an animal makes....and....I am amazed that they don't realize just how awesome it is.

No I couldn't go out this morning. I should be out tomorrow.

Over the years of hunting different places, I find that they usually roost in the same general areas though, so I'll go roost again tonight for tomorrow. I basically roost every night somewhere, just to hear birds and learn general locations.

Ah right, I missed that...well good luck tomorrow dude! :)

I just got back from NC and the weather is all over the place...was cool down there (in the 50s) and still cool up here too.

Odd year so far...usually it's quite a bit warmer.

The only thing better then hearing a Gobble at dusk, Is hearing one getting closer and closer the next morning

As a first year turkey hunter, I must say, the vocal part of hunting turkeys is over the top awesome. I thought I got excited when a deer pops up through the woods. This is pretty intense and hopefully I can get a bird on the ground soon.

Unbelievable....I have two birds put to bed in a great location again tonight....accidentally got too close and they actually flew right up right in front of me, One is a real nice bird. I had to wait till dark to back out of there so I didn't spook them....Then I went to buy my C week permit and the machine is down. No where else near by to get it...SO I guess I'll go in the morning with just a video camera. I'm so pissed right now. I shouldn't have waited till the last second, but I had so many things to get done I didn't get a chance to go for the permit until a little while ago.

Nice morning in the woods even though I didn't have a bow or gun in my hands. :cryingcry:

Didn't want to get too close just to video, but I was able to sneak within about 50 yards of the closest bird. Got a bunch of gobbles on video as they woke up and let the world know they're here! Shortly after I watched them fly down, but it seems the lighting wasn't good enough in there for the camera to really pick it up. I saw 3 birds fly down, they gobbled on the ground for about 20 minutes and then went silent after someone shot twice a little ways down in the wma. They gobbled at the shots, then they shut up after that and didn't talk at all.

I never called to them or anything because I didn't want to risk ruining it for future hunts, just to get a little video. They are there though, and did exactly what I thought they might to do.  Watching them fly up last night allowed me to know that they would probably fly back down the way they came up.....And they did.

Pretty cool Matty!  Man it's tough when you try to "time" your hunts based on that roosting BEFORE you buy a permit due to the shear cost of hunting here in NJ.  And naturally the machine is down!  Well hopefully you'll get the permit today and have a crack at them tomorrow
