The New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council voted unanimously on Thursday to approve a 122-day summer flounder season that will run from May 18 to Sept. 16 with a 171/2-inch fish and a five-fish bag limit for the 2013 season. The Council approved Option No. 2 from a possible choice of six options available. That option was the preferred choice of most fishing groups going into the meeting.

“It’s fair for the state,” said Greg Hueth of the Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund. Hueth said the regulations give the southern part of the state, where the fluking is good earlier in the year, a chance for a good season while providing northern New Jersey part of a September season, when the fishing usually improves.

Several of the options included a longer season, a bag limit of eight fish and an increase in size to 18 inches. However, concerns over quota overages associated with those regulations led to a decision erring on the side of caution.

Not a fan of the new regs at all. Give us our 8 fish back and move the size limit back up to 18 inches. I like those regs. This is only going to get worse year after year. Webloatbour 8 fish. Next season they'll have an option for 3 fish at something like 17 inches and that will pass. The following year all the options will be 3 fish. Eventually we will be like NY where is 2 fish at 21 inches and it will ruin the recreational fishing community. Bait and tackle shops will suffer because guys won't be fishing because gas is expensive and party boats will close up shop because know one is paying $65 to get on a party bot for 2 fish at 21 inches and no one is gonna spend $600+ on a charter. Maybe I'm just over thinking the whole situation but that's what I fear is gonna happen.

Then take fluke off the menu untill it can be farm raised. You make it like the world will stop if you couldnt buy 13 inch fluke at the market. No they keep giving the commercial side 60 percent of the quota at such a small size and the rec guys pay the price for a fish the commercial side hurt.Tell me how much money does the commercial side pump into the economy verses the rec guys. And year after year we get the short end of the stick. To a stock by the goverments screwed up science says is rebuilt. The same with sea bass and pots on the reef give me a break.

spentbrass i'm not even gonna argue with you for the simple reason you do not know what your talking about ///we don't catch 60 percent of the Quota and we never go over the quota by tens of thousands of pound like the sports do ..did you know every time we have a fluke landing we have to call the state two hours before coming to the dock so the Co's can check or weight.as far as money do you have any clue what permits cost state and fed .....fish farms that messed up even saying that i wish i knew who you where i would fix it so you would never be able to buy another piece of bait in this state and yes that's where your bait comes from good Ole commercial fishermen

So the commerical guys pump more Monet into the economy then the describe guys do.Please all you guys do is pump money into goverment permits and lobbist pockets.Yeah so what happens to the fish you pull up that put you over the limit tell me.Or are you saying that you don't pull up one fish over your limit? Sportsman pump Billions of dollars into the fishing industry. We are the reason you even have a market for bait.I love how you make it like you are doing me a service by rapping the fish stocks year after year and blaming the rec guys for it.

Commercial fisherman have raped the oceans long enough. I don't buy fish ever!

Not even bait! Fish farming is the way of the future.

so your going to "fix it" so that people that don't agree with you can never buy bait again in NJ? HAHAHA:rofl: Id love to see that one work!!!

Face it dude the more money is pumped into jersey from recreational fisherman than ever will be from commercial guys. Hopefully will be become better organized and save OUR oceans before every last fish ends up in a net or freezer case

Fortunately we do get it. We get whats being done to fish stocks. We get that there may not be fish for our grand children and great grand children because of commercial fisherman. You don't want an even playing field is what we really "get"
