Oh what a Saturday (plumbing pix)

I am in the process of renovating a bathroom in my 1930s colonial. Today was suppose to to be raise the closet flange and tile the floor. Nope. As I was chiseling off the old broken cast iron flange, to my surprise, nailed a pipe, which sent a geyser of water shooting as high as the ceiling. Why was there a water pipe in that location? First off that close to the stack and through the mortar bed. Seems silly to run copper through concrete. When 4 inches lower they could have ran it through the kitchen ceiling.

I had to chip the mortar away to get access to the pipe, cut and temporarily fit a new new pipe. These new shark bites are bada$$ by the way. Now the tiling job is on hold while I rerun new water lines to the second floor shower and sink. I don't trust those lines running through the mortar.

I am not a plumber but I can get by with a few things;)

Can any of u plumbers or contractor please tell me why they ran them there back then?
