MS22 Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 As with all calls, this generally boils down to personal preference. A lot has to do with how the call fits in the callers mouth...and a lot has to do with the ability of the caller to manipulate the diaphragm. Then there are some calls that just sound a lot better than some others...some just sound like dying animals. Lets hear your what your favorite diaphragm call is. Tell us the brand and model as well as the number of reeds and shape of cut of your favorite diaphragms. I seem to have to best luck manipulating calls with fewer reeds...less than 3. I also like a v cut. Primos a frame with v cut brought two gobblers into a parking lot of one of my favorite trout fishing spots in New York last spring. I had just arrived and stepped out of truck when I heard them gobbling about a hundred yards out. they came in hard after some yelps and clucks. unfortunately I didn't have my gun with me.[/align]
slugger Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Haven't brought it into the field yet, but my favorite is the Quaker Boy Old Boss Hen.
Matty Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I'll use anything, but the Primos A frames with half bat wing and v cut are good calls. Knight and Hale, HS Strut, Quaker Boy...I've used all of them and they all work great. Being financially impaired, I just buy whatever is a good deal and manipulate if need be to get a great sound. My go to though is anything with the following cut....This is a great cut right here often called a "bat-v" or half bat, etc....basically the same cut though from different manufacturers: http://www.rollingthundergamecalls.com/Done-Deal-Bat-V-Cut_p_42.html http://www.knightandhale.com/productdetail.aspx?id=KH1644 One thing I DON'T like is domes. That is probably a personal thing, I mean I can get them to sound good, but I don't like the feel. Some people love them...I'm not one of those people. Bottom line, try them...and carry a few different ones for different tones. “I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear
TDaly25 Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 my favorite diaphragm call is "Come and get it honey, I just put my diaphragm in." Excellence, in anything, never occurs by chanceAchieving perfection is impossible. Striving for perfection makes greatness achievable.
gobblergetter Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I like to use a straight double reed call for clearer yelps and a double or triple reed with a split 'v' for a raspy sound. Don't get to caught up with sounding great...some of the worst calls I've heard have come from live Hens.
Cousin Brown Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I had good luck using single reed calls all the way to calls w/ four reeds & everything in between. I still like the "old boss hen" though. Treestands don't demand, treestands don't complain, treestands simply ask me to sit down and listen.
