NY Salmon FIshing This Past Week-End

Ms Grit

Recommended Posts

So, fishing the Salmon River was a first for me this past week-end.  I have to say, standing in the shallow water at sunrise at the Ballpark with hundreds of people, and hundreds fish working their way upstream was just amazing to experience.  I got a LOT of practice in on my casting and managed 1 on Saturday and then on Sunday morning another small one.  I can see how fishing the Salmon River can become addicting as I can't wait to get back up there.

I don't think I have figured out the "Technique" yet as much as I think I got lucky through my persistence.

And yes, I am hoping to be able to go for for Steelhead in the Spring.

Aren't those rivers brutal to walk in up there? Like the perfect size boulders to roll ankles on haha

Tell me about it, lol.  But the second spot I was at, the Ellis Cove had much smaller rocks to walk through.

They apparently let some water out as the water was about 8-12 inches deeper on Sunday and seemed to be faster.

I thought for sure several times that I was going down.

Nice Pics Ms. Grit !! Beautiful Country

I never had the opportunity to go out and go figure I have a place about 1-1/2 hrs from there ... I guess it'll be on my bucket list. Just don't get to do half the things I'd like too any longer .

cool! You didn't get skunked. There is a method to that madness. I used to go up there and watch the crowds get crazy for these fish. I remember dragging a limit of Salmon up over the bank and through the woods to the road on more than a few occasions. And people think dragging deer is tough. The stream bed there is very dangerous if you are not prepared for it. Good Polaroid glasses and corkers on your boots are mandatory. You also have to realize when the waters are rising. They can literally take you away when they release it. With my feet the way they are I think I'll opt for a drift boat trip if I ever go again.

very nice  i havent been up in about 5 years. looks like this year i wont make it. but will be up in the winter for steelhead. last time i went fishing up there in the winter it was -12 degrees.  only way to warm my feet up was to stand in the river :headscratch:
