Our Life Skills kids were harvesting the sunflowers in our school's garden today.  I saved this poor little guy from the path of destruction.  

 

It posed for a photo-op before I relocated it to a safer bush.

I saw one exactly like that at the house yesterday. First time I saw one that wasn't all green.

Species Stagmomantis carolina - Carolina Mantis

 

Identification 

Head and thorax almost as long as the body. Antennae about half as long as middle legs. Pale green to brownish grey, often inconspicuous on vegetation. Males usually brown, females green or brown. Wings do not extend to tip of abdomen, especially in female. (Females apparently flightless, or nearly so.) Abdomen of female strongly widened in middle. Tegmina (outer wings) are broad, reaching apical third of the abdomen, with a stigmatic (dark) black patch.

 

The facial shield (plate below antennal insertion and between the eyes) is relatively long and narrow in Stagmomantis (1, 2 and 3), more squarish in Tenodera sinensis (4,and5)

Size 

Adults are 48-57 mm long (including wings).

Tenodera sinensis sinensis - Chinese Mantis

 

 

Identification 

Tan to pale green. Vertically striped face. Forewings tan with green along front margin. Compound eyes chocolate-brown at sunset, pale tan soon after sunrise and during the day. (1) A yellow spot between the raptorial arms distinguish T. sinensis from T. angustipennis, which has an orange spot.

Species Mantis religiosa - European Mantis

 

Identification 

According to the Key to Florida Mantids: 

"Front coxa with a large black-ringed spot near base, beneath; green color of tegmen not sharply confined to costal area."

The diagnostic black spots on the interior side of the front coxa may, or may not, have a white center or bullseye. In some instances these spots are entirely dark. See below for examples:

I think they come in both Brown and Green colors…..
