With all the bears on your property this is the stick you want, the Shillelagh.  It's Hophornbeam, which is dense and nearly indestructible, and it has a weighted end.  It ain't much to look at but you could do some serious damage with this bad boy.

20 years ago the Hosta was mowed flat by the deer.  Not anymore, deer sightings are few and far between these days.
