Trout question

Anyone know if they are stocking brown and brook trout in the rivers this year? I know they had a big die off a couple years ago at the hatchery. I wasn't sure if they ever recovered yet. Thanks in advance[emoji106]

Last article I read said 2018 I believe

There is no date set or even being discussed.  The process includes the bidding for and construction of roofs with solar panels over the existing raceways before one final, big effort to cleanse the raceways and water system of the furunculosis and then bringing in brown trout eggs from a hatchery known to have disease resistant strains of browns and then rearing those for a few years before releasing any into our stocked waters.  There are no plans currently for the state to ever stock brook trout again.  But that could change in the future.

Wow. That's really unfortunate what happened. I had no idea what was involved in the process to raise new fish after the disease. Thanks for the info.

The funny thing is, furunculosis in the wild is not a big deal for fish.  It's only in the tightly packed quarters of a fish hatchery where it becomes a big issue as that disease spreads quickly among stressed out trout.

Very interesting. It kinda stinks that the state has no plans to ever stock brook trout again. I guess the trophy fish they stock in certain lakes are from somewhere else?

Right now, only rainbows are being raised and stocked. There are some private stockings into certain water bodies that come from the Musky Trout Hatchery which is certified disease free. That hatchery raises brooks, Browns and rainbows as well as tiger trout.

You're talking about rivers only? Because I know they put some giant browns in some lakes.

In other words it's gonna suck for a longtime.....................................

I have no problem with rainbows and I think they do an excellent job raising and stocking, however I miss the variety, you can claim a rainbow can be aggressive but nothing hits a fathead or a spinner like at BROWN!!!!!!

NJF&W is not stocking anything but rainbows in any waters, stream, river or lake. If you know of some big browns being presently stocked it's being done by a private person or group/club and the fish are coming from a private hatchery.
