Longbow info

Traditional Archery Bowhunting.

I am seriously considering contiplating getting and using a Longbow for hunting.

From your personal experiences, what do you consider as the pros and cons of using the Longbow.

My regular bow for the past 21 years has been a Jeffrey Takedown Recurve, 62" 53#.

Getting older, and was thinking of reducing the draw weight to around 45#-48#.

I would like to hunt Jersey Deer and possibly Black Bear.

My ears are shot and hearing is basically worthless (just ask the wife she will confirm), but I still want a extremely quiet shooting bow.

Anyone shoot or have any of the Howard Hill bows?

If so what is your impression and possible recommendations on the hand grip styles available.

What is this "bone jarring hand shock" stuff, I hear so much about?

I am not looking for some sort of ultra fancy, candy ass bow with 16 different exotic woods, and 24 carrot gold inlays.

Any suggestions on a solid, reliable, center cut shelf, quiet shooting, smooth draw plain jane bow?

What is you input about this, am I looking for the holy grail?

Maybe I'll just keep what I have and continue to wonder what it is like to shoot a longbow.

I was told about the ETAR - Eastern Traditional Archery Rendezvous in July.  And also there is the Annual Whittingham  Rendezvous in April……..  I guess I can try out some bows then.

Getting cabin fever, anxiously waiting for the weather to break…….

Doesn't hurt to dream.

Sorry for the late night ramble, just want some solid understanding on what to look for when I begin my search for that Holy grail.

I get the feeling it will all come down to " subjective"… and will definitely need to hold, and shoot many different bows to find the right fit.

From you experiences with these Rendezvous, are the vendors willing to let you handle and shoot their wares before purchase?

Because I will not buy a cat in a sack…. I need to have hands on….

Thanks for your time.

Talk to "Longbow" on NJH... That is all he hunts with. I am sure he would be a wealth of information

Might not be the best guy to talk to if you are particular, and looking for little hand shock, nice handle, or the "holy grail of longbows". lol That guy basically hunts with a crude hunk of hickory wood. He could pick up any bent stick, make it work and be happy. lol

Thank you gentlemen for your informative replies.

Again, I have a lot to mull over.

Warm regards,

FWIW:  2 ideas to help you gather info.  Check out archerytalk.com, they have a traditional archery section, lots of info available.  Also, you may consider this book, if you are new to shooting a stickbow:  "Shooting the Stickbow"  available from amazon for about $20.  Pick up my copy every so often, and everytime I do, I learn something new.  Well worth the bucks.  Good luck in your search.
