I have a FoxPro spitfire and it has served me well...no complaints.

Its no longer made but proves even the low range foxpros are good devices

so the fox pro deadbone would be a good investment? i am assuming all fox pros are water proof? what about the remote?

Kype,

What kind of calling do you want to do?  Do you want to call them in directly to you?  Or, do you want them to be drawn to an alternate location to ambush?

I call them directly in to me.  However, I have been busted by a few foxes that were lamp-shy.  I use the wam caller which I bought in Europe.  I prefer them over electronic as you can vary their tone and volume much easier than electronic.  Also, the electronic calls can have short play times which have to be looped over and over.

When hunting or varminting, I prefer simplicity.  The less stuff, especially electronics, the better.

As a cheap alternative, download some calls to your phone and play them in the field.  Would cost nothing.

Setting up a caller in an alternate location is great to set up an ambush site or if you are getting winded.  Some of them callers have motion devices which may help.  However, I get the great results with the Wam caller.

Before you go spending hundreds, give a few of the cheap methods above a try.  Also, go to the pet store and buy a squeaky toy for dogs and give it a try.

Are you using a lamp/spotlight?  If so, try the Night Force 170.  Get an amber filter or red too.  Foxes are clever, not sure if the y'otes are as much.  If a fox has been lamped at night and lived to tell the story, they quickly avoid the white light.  An amber, red, or other color lens often helps.

Again, try the cheaper alternatives.  Most of the guys I know that bought the elctronic callers now use the Wam, or call on their own, and the caller is collecting dust on the pile of stuff you "thought" you should buy when you were first getting in to the sport.

HH already linked to the icotec thread. I definitely recommend them for the price.

The other thing is you can just use diaphragm and mouth calls. I've called a lot of foxes in on diaphragm calls. If you practice, you can make a lot of different sounds with diaphragm calls. Plus you can really vary the volume, intensity, cadence, etc limited only by your lungs and imagination.

Here's one before I ever had an electronic caller. Still have the call hanging out of my mouth.

“I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear

i'm no expert but i had good results with a dying rabbit mouth call. a lot less stuff to carry around is better for me.

Good advice.

Handheld mouth calls are cheap and work well, try one first to see if predator calling is something you really want to pursue. A lot of electronic callers are sitting idol cause guys find out it ain't always like you see on tv.

If you get a Fox or coyote to come charging in you will be hooked.
