A Different Kind of Hunting

Recommended Posts

We catch them as part of the USFWS banding program.  Data is used to track the migration of raptors.  Each bird caught is banded and data is obtained.  It is stored in a national database. I've caught birds that were previously banded from up in Canada as well as from Texas.  Birds are caught in bow traps and mist nets.  I once worked on a project where dho-gazza nets were used.  How they all work is pretty readily available via Google search.

To Axiom's not seeing the point comment:  there are two obvious sides to this - those who see the point and those who do not.  And I think both sides both sides have merit and valid arguments for and against.  I can see them both.  To that end, I don't do it as much as I used to.  Same as for the bobcat and other wildlife work I used to do.   The same can be applied to other activities that I won't even bring up here for purpose of avoiding pissing match(s).

Well since you said "Each bird caught is banded and data is obtained", i think that makes for a better argument on the for side... Didnt know that was your objective..  Was under the impression you just liked to catch'um for the fun of it.. But even if that was the case, "the thrill of luring the bird into the trap and "pulling the trigger" is like drugs for me." is another solid argument in favor of the for side..

just say'n... :cupcoffee:

:D
