Been deer hunting since age 10 so I guess that makes 41 years of shotgun hunting deer, although I honestly don't shotgun hunt much anymore and in fact last few years just bow hunt opening day of 6-day. I honestly could not give a rat's ass for 6-day shotgun season.  I been bow hunting 31 years... I guess it was around 2003 or so when I finally "got it" and became a much better hunter, and really started to understand mature deer better. Having grown up in a very active hunting club where deer drives were the norm, I never really got to learn how to be a good deer hunter. Picking up the bow around 1984 was quite liberating, and I soon became the dink-slayer lol... I still didn't understand how mature deer behave though. All my "wallhangers" came from 2003 onward...

2003 - a really nice 165# dressed 8pt.. I finally started to figure out that bucks 3.5+ years old, are an entirely different species.

I ate my tag a lot after that, my next decent buck was this 2006 7pt, I didn't hunt much that year, my wife was dying of breast cancer. Probably not a buck I would not normally shoot, but it had special meaning as I know it was my last chance to hunt that season.  It's probably my smallest mount, but I look at it, and I know what it meant.

A deer at work we had nicknamed "tank". Heaviest bodied deer I've ever seen in 22 years of working nights. Don't think anyone there ever connected. Pretty sure he gave up the ghost in the ehd outbreak after hurricane Irene.
