Hunting in Chatham, NJ

The only thing I know about that area is that not once have I seen, at least that I can recall, anyone on here talking about hunting there. Only on threads about EHD so, That's not too promising. Aside from the limited permit hunt, maybe someone familiar with your area could get you on some public land within reasonable driving distance???????

There is Morris county Parks by permit and the great swamp by permit. You could try black River wma in Chester.most of the area is lock up private land good luck . I would spend the spring and summer working on the permit and check out wma .

A buddy and I hunted the great swamp a couple years ago.  Not many deer in there after EHD hit hard, however the deer we saw taken had some impressive racks. Without a doubt, you have to do your homework.

Closest town with bow hunting currently allowed would be long hill twp. If u do decide to shotgun/ muzzy hunt the great swamp, I could get u on some decent bucks in there (not many anymore!). Chatham is currently closed to bow hunting by ordinance at this time.

I've worked in Chatham for many years and there are tons of nice bucks. I would stop at the police department to find out but, I think that the town is no discharge.

if you are looking to hunt close to home, you moved to the wrong town.

Wish we could still hunt it but since it wont be my forever home town. I will have to find a town where you can hunt

Plenty of great hunting within a few miles of you! Do your ordinance research and check tax maps.

This only applies to practice no? Ordinances don't supersede the game laws, you can still hunt right? I thought Princeton had this same issue years ago but plenty of guys hunting there.

A town ordinance DOES supercede any state law with the exception if the land is owned by the state.

Princeton has a firearm ordinance but there is a specific exception for hunting laws

Interesting. Wasn't there also a case in Cherry Hill where the wardens actually testified on behalf of the hunters who were legally hunting but got in trouble with the local police due to ordinances? This is a good topic because it seems to vary from town to town. Not sure if Cherry Hill also had an exception but if they did not sure why it went to court.
