Guess the age of these bucks

Recommended Posts

Here are 7 bucks that I know the exact age of in the photographs.

If you have the time, list each one by number and the age you guess it to be. One hint: some of the pictures may be the same deer at different ages.

Yes I blocked out the antlers and in some cases I may have made the blocks huge compared to the real antler size to throw you off if you're trying to guess using antlers at all.

Good luck! You win nothing, but maybe the right to brag if you're really good at it. I know some of the pictures are not at all optimal for judging age, but give it a go anyway.

I will reveal the answers after I get enough guesses and if you're really impatient, and ask nicely, I may PM you the answers after you guess.

I'll give you two hints but no multiple choice...yet anyway. We'll see how it goes....If we have to resort to multiple choice, we eventually will. lol

1st hint: All the deer are younger than I am. lol

2nd hint: BowhunterNJ got two right. (pretty darn good considering how hard this is)

No offense, Matty, but there's not a single picture there that gives enough information.  And I don't mean the blocking out of the horns.  We would need full on broadside photos with the deer standing normally.  To see the main traits that tell a buck's age, that's about the only way to tell.

And this is EXACTLY my reason for only getting 2 answers right!!!  :pinocchio:  :samurai::rofl:

I acknowledged in the original post some of them are terrible photos for this, but just play along, no penalty, no prize.

You can see neck and brisket in most, and back and belly as well as the face (not the profile of the nose, but if it's greying, saggy dewlap, etc).

If I had to guess, I'd probably say....

1 - 4

2 - 3 or 4

3 - 1

4 - 2

5 - 3

6 - 5

7 - 3

But I don't have to guess, cause I know their birthdays. LOL.....And those aren't necessarily the right answers, those would be my guesses from those limited pictures of each animal.

BowhunterNJ - 2 correct.

DevilHorns -     1 correct.

PAlawman -      2 correct.

Trust me this is hard as hell. No shame in guessing wrong.

If you've already guessed and want to know the correct answers, just PM me.

However, if you don't play...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the reasoning behind posting the pics like this is this simulates what a hunter may actually see of a buck right before they decide to shoot...

I would also venture to say that we as hunters hardly ever have unlimited time to properly look at a deer at all angles and guess an age... Just doesn't happen...

So like the vast majority of hunters we are only going to guess right maybe 20% of the time when judging deer before we decide to shoot.
