Just moved here from Florida. Didn't see much opportunity to lease land here so I'm hunting public land. I know I'm asking a lot but any advice on decent public hunting spots near Wayne?

Welcome Xertion.

Heading north on route 23 there are numerous public properties with good hunting.

Thanks! I'll check this out. I've hunted black river (passing by I saw numerous dead deer by the road by 206) and Sparta wma (filled with bears).

Thanks. It's been my experience that not all wma or state land for hunting are equal. Thanks for the tip.

This is my backyard (literally) but the bears are so bad that I don't hunt behind the house until after shotgun season in December.  It's great during muzzleloader and winter bow but fall bow is a nightmare due to the bears.

The route 80 west corridor is another option for you.  There are places you can get to off 23 or 80 like Berkshire Valley WMA.  And up north is Hamburg.  Like Rusty, I hunt in or around Sparta Mountain WMA and enjoy staring at bears all fall until about 6 Day.

What are you planning to hunt?  Sounds like deer only?  Welcome to NJ.

Welcome Xertion!

Berkshire Valley WMA and areas around Rt. 23 are good places to start.

Ah nice, my parents live down near Apollo Beach, and my brother is in St Petes.  I go down there every winter to escape the cold for a week or so and do a little fishing in the canals with my dad.

Thanks. This helps. On my hit list this season is deer, Turkey and bear (providing I get a tag).

Wildcat Ridge WMA is even closer.  Just thinking of other lands you can hunt.  My uncles grew up in Wayne hunting the many open lands there back in the late 40s and early 50s.  That ship sailed long ago!  You also have Norvin Green State Forest nearby in West Milford and surrounding towns to check out for deer.

I'm sending you a PM with some info that should be helpful. I won't do all the homework for you, because I also hunt the same area on occasion, but it should be a great start for you since you're completely new to the area.

All these other recommendations from everyone are really good too.
