Anyone Bunny Bashing?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone out there is in to shooting rabbits/hare, aka, bunny bashing.

I have shot many, however, outside of NJ where the 10/22 with subs and a Lightforce 170 comes in very handy.

Is it illegal to spotlight rabbits/hare in NJ?  You can spotlight opossum and raccoon, correct?

Also, for bunnies, air guns only, correct?  No 22 subs or shorts, correct?

On the way out of the field tonight saw plenty of eyes.  Would have been nice to bring a few home for supper.

I just got a Gammo airgun just for this purpose. Now I need a place to hunt them. Any recommendations? I'm in NNJ

Most of the same WMAs that stock pheasants in fields also have great or decent rabbit hunting.  At least during the early season.  Before they moved rabbit season up, I would guide for my friends' kids at places like Flat Brook-Roy WMA on the youth pheasant day and couldn't believe how many bunnies busted loose as we chased pheasants.

So we cannot spotlight them, correct?  I did not find any prohibition on using a spotlight for rabbits.  However, unlike opossum and raccoon, I did not find it stated that a spotlight could be used.

Guess the RWS gets in to the field this year.

Hunting hours for rabbits are sunrise to half hour after sunset, so there is no spot lighting.

The only animals you're allowed to use lights for are raccoon, opossum, fox and coyote (during the special night time season) and bowfishing if you want to include that. No other animal (that I'm aware of) is allowed to be harvested with the aid of a light.

I'm gonna try squirrel hunting this year just for poopies and giggles...never tried for rabbits.

“I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear
