Don't you think this should be a crime?

Guy shoots another guy who is calling for yotes in the woods.  He says he shot at a "brown thing" and later realized it was a man.  To me, this isn't just an accident.  It's more akin to manslaughter.  Significant jail time should be the penalty.

A hunter in North Carolina who was using an electronic animal caller was fatally shot by man with an AR-15 who said he mistook the sounds for coyotes roaming near his home, police and relatives said.

Michael Seth Marsh, 26, was killed late Monday in a wooded area in Taylorsville, about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, as he was hunting coyotes with a 12-gauge shotgun, a rifle and an electronic coyote call, the Taylorsville Times reports.

Marsh, who served as the pastor of Russell Gap Baptist Church, was shot several times in the chest with an AR-15 by a man who told police he heard coyotes screaming nearby and believed the animals had trapped something in a tree.

The man, whose identity was not released because he was not immediately charged, said he then fired two shots at the brown and gray movement in the trees. The shooter later called police after he realized he had shot the hunter and not a wild animal.

Marsh was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he could not be saved. Marsh is survived by his wife, Katy, and two children, Braelynn and Isaac.

I don't know how many times we have to say it "know your target and beyond". It really is that simple and those that can't follow that should never hunt again, AND be subjected to whatever crime was committed and murder / manslaughter is a crime.

Thats why foxpro offers a new category called "public safety" it has a distress call as well as a call that states your a hunter using an electronic call

I can never understand this. This kind of thing gets me so mad. Who shoots at something that is partially/completely hidden behind vegetation???? Every time you shoot at something, don't you always "see" the animal? I've never shot at an animal that I did not KNOW was what I'm hunting for. And by KNOW I mean 100% certainty know. I've let things walk because I wasn't sure what it was I was seeing.

How do you pull a trigger and not be certain of your target??? I just don't get it. Pulling a trigger is a serious thing in my book because you are purposefully trying to kill something - you damn well better know what it is you are trying to kill! You pull the trigger, you ain't calling it back, and no "my bad"s allowed. You are responsible for wherever that shot goes.

There was a guy over on NJH a few years ago who posted pics of him after he got shot turkey hunting because the other guy "thought" he saw a turkey. How the hell do you mistake a man for a turkey? Unless, of course, you didn't really get a good sight picture and you saw some movement in the woods and assumed it was turkey.

This guy should not walk - I don't know what the penalty should be, but there should be something.  And he certainly should lose whatever hunting privileges he had. I don't want a guy like that hunting in the same woods as me - he clearly has no concept of gun safety.

Off my soap box now, but this kind of thing burns me up because I just think "there are also people like this in the woods where I hunt"!!! Think about THAT!

Didn't know this... Thanks... downloading it now and will put it on my caller. Never know when it will come in handy. That link is the download link for the public safety announcement - the other one is a "help, I need assistance" if you want that. See the free library for them.
