Broadhead Cutting Width(Update)#2

Had this deer come in this evening.  One eye and hobbling along.  24 yards shot.  Double lung.  Deer jumped up in the air, took some big bounds for 40 yards and then stopped for about 8-10 seconds, fell down and kicked a few times.  Used my son's cross bow tonight KI350, 350 FPS, Carbon Express Torrid 3 blade mechanical.  One of the blades was broken, from hitting the ground I think.  The shot was between ribs in and out.  Holes thru both lungs.  My son's bow is quite a bit quieter than mine.   This deer didn't take off on a death run, why I don't know.  Those 10 seconds that it stood there it could have probably gone 100 yards. First pic is entry.

My guess is the sound, I had an Excaliber Ibex cross bow that sounded like a .22 going off, missed a relaxed doe at just a shay over 20 completely ducked it, sold it the next day. Lol compound is whisper quiet, and deer I hit like that seldom go further that 40-50 yards.

Hunt with a Vizsla, cause life's to short to hunt with an ugly dog! :D RIP Tilly monster. (Attila) 2004-2017.

They are not ducking my arrow at 20,30 or 40 yards at 410 fps. IMHO.  The arrow is already almost half way there by the time they hear it.

On a more serious note, that shot was still a bit further back than I prefer.  I want the bolt to blow through the opposite front leg / shoulder.  That puts the arrow up by the heart and in the front lobes of the lungs.  They are down in seconds when you hit them there.

How was the short blood trail?

I like the shot placement, one or two inches either way is still a dead deer.  Aiming 2" forward of where you hit doesn't leave much room for era.  If your impact is 2" forward of your point of aim you're possibly in the shoulder.  I think that made sense.

But his shot was better because he didn't ruin any meat.

well? Sound travels waaaaaay faster that 410fps, and the reaction time of deer to sound is 3/10sec, I read a while back, forget where, but even the fastest bows take something 4-5/10ths of a sec to travel 40 yards, and 1/10-2/10's at 20 or less, or there about, under 20 with a loud bow is a kill, but that deer is running for the hills!! Lol, as I think about it I think it was in seasons of the whitetail by John Ozoga, a deers reflexes and reaction time is nooooo joke! https://youtu.be/9_B9yrgee5o Edited by GhostBear

I agree, at 40 there may a little movement due to the loud bow.  I agree absolutely that the loud noise may frighten a deer to go into an all out panicked death run instead of just taking a few leaps and stopping.  Still not sure if the "panicked death run reaction" is due to noise, arrow hitting bone, or what.  Seems logical that if a deer heard or saw nothing, but was just stuck with an arrow it might not run as far everything else being equal.

It was pretty good.  A few drops at first from where I hit it out to 15 yards. then about an 30 inch wide trail, with pretty heavy spattering for the rest of the 30 yards to where it went down.  I was shooting a mechanical today and I didn't want to risk hitting the shoulder and I didn't want to hit the leg on the opposite side, which might cause a panicked reaction.  Just wanted to zip it thru the lungs and see what happened.

Congrats!

1-unfortunately, that happens with mechanicals. You can probably replace the blades as long as the ferrule is good

2-is there any way to quiet your xbow down? Limbsavers? String leeches?

Thanks. They are only 14.99 for 3, so I will probably just use another.  I am going to look into ways to quiet it down.  I'm sure I'll find info on the Excalibur site.
