Snowy 3 Point Buck

Yes I killed a spike on a wma with the shotgun and I don't feel bad at all, I would say it has to be 2 years old at least.

This tiny wma in zone 8 i've been hunting this year with various weapons has produced be it coon, deer, possum....seen turkey, fox and tons of ducks/geese. I went out every morning before work during 6 day and I can honestly say no one got a deer at least in the morning. Weren't even that many people out, some mornings none....was also checking my DP trap sets in the process and knocked out a few coon and opossum so it wasn't a waste. Snow day helped me see a lot which was also nice.

I am actually really happy to fill this shotgun permit tag now, I wasn't even trying for a buck today since i figured what were the odds of getting one with the 3 days left for permit shotgun this year and me just doing a walkthrough before work haha...i was trying to get a shot at this herd of doe that i keep bumping almost every single time that i check this one area by a river/thick grassy field. They seem to move within the field and go across the river which is mostly all private property or hang tight on the banks and move into more private property. I was face to face with a straggler doe in thick grass that went a bit above the field a few times while checking DP traps and i had the crossbow and a bat only so no shot. FIgured i would get that chance again during 6 day, nope nothing seen....then wednesday they appear again...100 yards i see them eating and bedded across the small part of the river on the one patch that is still WMA. I start to crawl closer to get a clear shot with a slug and damn ducks tucked along the bank took off and flew right at the doe and spooked them.

Went out this morning got to the place at 8:45, one other guy was here parked closer to the main road and i saw where he was sitting in the woods. I have a car so i also parked by the road because i didn't want to chance getting stuck down the snow covered dirt road that's filled with potholes. I walked down the dirt road and followed fresh deer tracks for a ways into the woods until it got too thick, I decided to work my way down to where the doe usually are hitting that grassy field at a different angle with the wind in my face. I'm just getting into the field about 40 yards from the bank of the river after walking for over an hour to get down to it and bam i see 4 does jump 50 yards+ away in the thick grass, 3 disappeared to my left and one went to my right into the woods i just came out of. I moved a bit to try and get a shot but she entered the woods a bit too far away from me to throw out a decent shot. I walked to where the doe entered the woods from the field and decided to hang tight to the river bank since that area is a 10FT drop so they can't cross. I start slowly moving, stopping and looking around and the next thing i know i see the antlers and then his head moving in the grass he was walking slowly towards me taking almost the same trail in the grass the doe did. I crouched a bit and let him come in closer, took the shot at about 35-40 yards in the tall grass he was broadside. I could see his head and neck and put the dot where his body would be. 1 shot dropped him dead 00 buck 3 inch shell. Tagged, gutted, bagged the liver & heart and busted my butt getting this deer out of the field and woods and to my car, 1 hour to drag out...at one point i threw him over my shoulders and walked him out of the grass and up a bit of the hill. I am sore as hell and i love it!  thanks for reading and hope ya'll have a Merry Christmas!
