ICE?

Recommended Posts

With the recent temps and projected forecast, what's everyone's thoughts on the odds for fishable ice this weekend?

I have a brand new outfit of ice fishing gear that has been sitting brand new since last December. I'm itching to try something new..

Feel free to name anywhere you've seen fishable ice...

I named fishable ice a couple years ago and almost got linched as if it was a secret lake.  Budd Lake freezes up pretty quickly when I've driven by it the last couple years.  Haven't been that way though recently.  Maybe someone else can speak to it that lives nearby.  I would like to get the kids out there to try it again but I don't have the gear.

I think it's "possible" smaller bodies of water (less deep) could produce some safe (barely) by the weekend... I like to see a few weeks of sustained ice-making weather before I venture out...  I don't like to have to even "think about it" as for being safe ice.

For example - even if a cove of Lake Hopatcong were to freeze over, I seriously doubt the entire lake would be by this weekend.  Budd Lake is very shallow, so I suppose it has a chance, but even smaller bodies of water have a better chance. Also with wind- it further impedes ice on the bigger lakes.

I certainly share the sediment, I honestly wouldn't venture out onto the ice unless I saw someone else on it (both for reassurance it is holding and for help if I happened to go in)

I'm a total ice newbie so I'm not to informed as to how the ice up process goes around here. I see a week or so of really cold temps and wonder if that will get the job done. I've seen plenty of frozen water, but nothing I'd fish in. Was more so curious if theres areas more towards Sussex county area that's seeing consistent ice. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.. and just hoping to go ice fishing lol
