STUMPED - Tree ID, please

Only info I have is that it's a fairly large tree, growing in Middlesex County, aromatic, most-likely NOT a magnolia.  Not sure if its native or ornamental.  Thanks.

looks like a Bay leaf...   

 

In italy, a lot of the hedge shrubs are the Bay leaf bush/tree...   That would make it aromatic

JH - appreciate the help, but I tend to disagree after a google search.  I don't see the single, large, fuzzy, terminal bud, heavily lenticel branches, and it is reported to grow in Zones 8-11.  New Brunswick/Piscataway would be, at best, 6 so I don't think it would survive a winter.  I thinks its on Cook Campus and if so, its prolly some obscure tree that got planted by some dendrologist or someone from the LA Dept.  Back inmy day there, there was some cool plant material scattered over that campus as well as in the display gardens.  My first guess was Ben Franklin Tree, but that does not seem to be it, either.

Is there more than one type of magnolia?  

 

I ran it through a taxonomic key and came up with magnolia.  Normally in these situations I ask Little M.
