Bear Take Down doe down

Growing up I idolized two men; my Dad, a decorated WWII Marine Raider and Fred Bear, my hunting hero. Mr Bear contributed many things to the archery and bowhunting world but his crowning achievement was the invention of the Bear Take Down bow latch, which enabled the user to dis-assemble and re-assemble their 3 piece recurve without any tools. I can well remember drooling over the 1970 Bear Archery catalog with it's many offerings, but those Take Downs....they came in various sizes and colors, two-tone wood handles, magnesium handles, flocked magnesium handles, available with different interchangeable plastic grips, (high wrist, low wrist). Three different limb lengths. Just about any poundage a guy would want. It was amazing

A few years back some Bear Archery enthusiasts started clamoring for Bear to start a new run of two-tone wood handles, which they did. So, I figured I'd put my name on the list, put my order in at Big Jim's and ended up with the second one to come off the assembly line. How cool is that?

Bow shot fine. But spent all it's time in the house. Then, NJ had it's first archery bear season and I thought what better to carry than my new TD. She's 57# at my draw so instead of the usual 10 grains per pound arrow weight I went a bit heavier and made up some Goldtips at 620 grains. And since this was going to be my October Bow, I gave them a pink theme with some pink on the wraps and 2 pink fletches in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every time I pick it up I'm reminded to send up a little prayer for all the ladies fighting this scourge.

I haven't been out much this season, bear hunting was a bust, weather was too hot and I seem to fall farther and farther behind schedule every passing year, just haven't been into it. But finally the weather has turned and I'm getting caught up. And the bucks are starting to do their thing. And I need meat for breakfast sausage. Set up a treestand on an outside corner with a bunch of nice rubs, although I've killed a couple deer on bait I prefer to go "old school" and hunt sign, and got in it before daylight yesterday. Saw about a dozen in the distance. About 8 am a doe and her bb came by at a fast pace, gave her pass because I figured something big might be behind her. nada About an hour later a small buck came from the opposite direction and I was starting to eye him up with ill intent, but I got a grip on myself.

By 9:30 I was feeling old and cold, didn't have enough on, thinking about getting down, and there she was. Right in front of me, 25 yards, lone doe, perfect. As I got my bow off the hook she passed me and I thought, " when the Great Provider gives you a gift like this it would be discourteous not to take it", so I did. About a 20 yard shot, angling away, she went about 40 yards and tipped over, it was beautiful.
