My lucky day...

...but not as you might think.

I got to a spot yesterday early afternoon I have been wanting to get into. Was waiting for some cooler weather and the right wind. Got it yesterday and slipped in quietly. Lots of fresh sign, huge scrape a few yards away, plenty of old and fresh droppings, a few nice rubs, and lots of empty acorn hulls. Got settled in and reached to put my bow on the holder when I heard the stand make a pop, and it shifted a little. I thought to myself, hmm, that's probably not good. I looked down and saw this...

If I had 4 pumpkin whoopie pies instead of just 3 after lunch, might have snapped them all.

Got down rapidly and went to another spot. I was belted in but still not fond of hanging by my harness. I checked my stand before using it this year, like every year, and there were no signs of rust or fraying. In fact, it looked just like this, the other cable. Goes to show it can happen without any warning. Be careful up there.

My turn for a little rant   There's gotta be a "perfect storm" of treestand related accidents brewing. I see so many guys leaving stands in year after year after year.... nothing is harder than the elements, especially the sun, on nylon straps, plus the tree is growing!!!!!  putting even more strain on the system. and then there's the cables....be careful out there Boys and Girls, Thank You

without me, my rifle is nothing

Not to be a conspiracy theorist. First picture it looks like the strand all the way to the right was snipped for how smooth it is. Same goes for the stand to the far left except one piece. Others look liked they popped under weight.

That's why I asked, that's what it looks like to me too.

This is one of the reasons I'm pretty much 100% mobile now.  Even on private land.  I use a climber, hang on / sticks, and hunt from the ground sometimes.  I have lots of trees marked and set up, but I don' leave anything other than safety lines out.  The second reason is:less for people to steal.

No conspiracy theories or weather related failures. This stand was not left out for mother nature or some jackwad to fool with. It's been garage kept ever since I bought it, and this is the third set of cables I've put on it. I have numerous trees with either steps or sticks that I use, and I carry this stand in on my back, hang it in about 20 seconds, and climb aboard. It comes out with me after each hunt to go to the next tree. Gorilla Silverback that is almost 20 years old, light as a feather, easy to set up, and (when the cables hold) sturdy as a rock. I do have some stands that I leave out (chain on stands) but always pull in at the end of the year. Some of them are as old as this one but have never had a cable issue.

I'm beginning to wonder if there wasn't some design flaw in the placement of the cables with the Gorilla brand that causes this, and caused them to go out of business. Like I said, this is the 3rd set, and there isn't any weather related issue.

The life span of a tree stand is very limited. Leaving it up all year reduces the useful time of it also. Sometimes you can see the deterioration and sometimes not. In my opinion it is not worth taking the chance. When you question a older stand maybe it is time to get rid of it. Stay safe my friends.
