State's Dog Training Birds!

Recommended Posts

I was out at Black River on Saturday morning around 9:30.  There were a good amount of people out there running their dogs.   My dogs picked up a hen as we rounded the first corner and then a cockbird about 5 mins later.  After that we hit some of the fields way in the back and didn't see anything for the next hour.  It was pretty hot by the point so we called it quits.  All in all, it was a good day for the dogs and myself.  The ticks were pretty bad on the dogs so make sure you've got your dogs treated.

They do get pushed around, last year before Attill passed, we had a great day on the Sunday after, he had 6 points in about a three hour run, boy do I miss him.

I went to Pequest early Saturday morning trying to beat the heat.  The entire big main field is now cluster planted in sorghum, not in rows.  It beat the hell out of my young pointing dog and me and in 30 min he was bleeding from nose and tongue.  He did put up 2 hens after working them for 10 mins each, just kept relocating, although all I could see was the tops of the sorghum move.  So we went to the other side and worked the hedge rows and put up rooster,  for a total of 3 birds.  Most others didn't see a bird, it's tough in there and I don't think that they put out a lot of birds, saw a lot more birds last year.

Took the old dog for a short walk at Clinton Sunday evening  we didn't see any birds but Clinton is hard on an old dog.

Well, they only have a little over 45K birds to stock this year, so I'm sure they put less than last year for training, Rockport is nowhere near what they used to be like, getting worse every year. 45k this year, what will next year be like? 35k?

I honestly have no complaints about the amount of birds the State releases, some years they have a surplus and we all benefit . We very rarely don't find birds during the season, and we mostly hunt the non stocking days. I think the money we pay for a stamp is a real bargain.

If you say so, but just 15years ago they where releasing 65k birds and the stamp was $20, it's gone down from that high to 45K birds this year and now the stamp is $40. I dunno but that don't add up to me, pay more get less.

We had a productive day today at Clinton. Not sure what the difference was, maybe they released birds last night, but anyway we flushed 3 in the morning and came back and flushed two more!
