May have dodged a bullet

This  one spot I hunt I normally use my climber and this is the tree I always use. The double trunk provides good cover and it is in a good location. Well yesterday morning I hunted it and right before I started to descend I look up and see the tree is dead. Now I knew it hasn't been looking good the last few years but now there was nothing indicating it survived since last season, so I assume it's been dead almost a year. I will NOT hunt it any more but any you tree experts know how long it takes before they are truly not safe. I also have a few more trees that are good for climbers but are also showing signs of shutting down and am now concerned that I should just not use them. What gets me concerned is some of the other trees have that rotted look at the bottom like this dead one. Thoughts?

Always go with your gut feeling. If it concerns you that the tree is diseased or dead, don't hunt it. It's not worth it.

I would be concerned if the bark fell off and it was a really windy day.  Otherwise I would use it.

If you feel it is unsafe, then do not use it.

Yeah I am done with that tree and the other ones too. It sucks that I may have to hang a ladder stand there now since there are no other good trees for the climber. This spot is right off a power line and I really didn't want to advertise my presence.

An "in and out" hang on with sticks? At first I hated them, but sometimes its fun. I use that for trees I can't get my climber in....

Have you tried hunting from the ground?  It works, and it's fun.
