Exactly ! Short of putting the animal down, because it was sick or wounded I would not shoot anything I wasn't going to eat. Looks like road rash to me.

Looks more like an infected injury to me though I'm no vet. I've shot some mangy fox before and it didn't look like that. Edible? Really? I've never been that hungry. I damn sure wouldn't eat it...
