Sept Goose ????'s

Anyone hunt Sept goose in Monmouth/ocean county areas and would teach newbie and his son how to go about doing it?

Or maybe direct us to an area to go. My son got me into hunting 3yrs ago when he was 10...he has only been out deer hunting 3 times and found it too boring and lost interest.

Hoping some goose action might help him back into hunting!

Any/all suggestions are welcome!

I just drove around for *5 hours* a couple days ago in that general area (well, the southern part of the state anyway, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland) scouting public lands for duck and goose spots. Just to see what the area looks like, the road conditions, what the boat ramps look like, can I get my truck in there, do I see any birds now or what looks like good bird habitat? I found one large flock of geese sitting on top of a private sod farm with public fields not 1/4 mile away :) I didn't scout on the water - but you can do that too. I didn't have the time because my spots I wanted to check out were all over the place.

What I did was I looked at the public WMA maps on the NJ DFW website. Then using Google Maps I pinned locations I wanted to scout and used Google to route me directions to all those spots in an efficient way. I basically went east, hitting all my spots along the way then south and looped back west hitting more spots on the way back home. I think I found a few good duck spots myself. Not many fields for geese - most of the fields now (public anyway) still seem to all have crops of corn and beans and they won't be harvested until October at least I think.

But, don't discount driving around and scouting. Bring your son along and show him that this is part of hunting too. It's not all "get up, sit in field, shoot, go home." Have him look at the WMA maps and use Google Maps (or Bing Maps, for better imagery) with you to do some preliminary scouting at home together. Then, bring some sammiches and drinks and drive around together for a few hours hitting the spots you want to check out in person. Quality time together, too.

I've found scouting is a big part of hunting (be it for deer or goose or whatever). Gotta put in the time. And when you finally bag what you are hunting for, its all the more satisfying - to know you put in all the hard work and it paid off. I'm looking forward to hitting some of these duck spots I found and hoping I can get me some birds. And I still haven't bagged a deer yet but boy when I do!!!  :D
