Trail cam card ERROR. And deleting old pics

Recommended Posts

I recently set up a trail cam for my pal to catch a trespasser on his property and one of the times I checked it, the screen on cam stated ERR and I had no pics but boot tracks were on the trail. Any idea why card would be in error? Then on my other card, I went to select all pics for deletion and it would not let me delete pics... I tried deleting them single at a time, nada, I checked the little switch on side of card and it was up, in the correct location to allow for deleting. BTW....we ended up catching the trespasser on a subsequent check of the cam.... actually caught 2 trespassers... our target subject and an unidentified youth fisherman!!!

My dad just had this issue with a new Wildgame cam he got from Dicks. The issue was the card itself. It has to be a regular sd it cant say uhs or xc. He had to get one from dicks I think it was a browning sd card. Not sure if this helps, but it did his

Sounds like your pictures, you can't delete, are protected. I can protect any pictures from accidental erase by "protecting them" but that's on a regular camera. Check to see if your trail cam has this setting and its turned on.

I know one thing that has fixed a lot of my trail cam issues since I do swap cards from differing brands, is to do a full format on SD cards after I copy the pictures I want from them. (the long format, not the quick one)

I've had tons of issues with trail cams cards having no pics, or being corrupted.  Now, I do the following and it seems to fix the problem:

1.  When I swap our cards, I first power down the trail cam and count to 10 before I eject the old card.  I think that sometimes, it is in the process of writing on the SD card b/c you trigger the motion sensor.  If you pull it out while it's writing it sometimes messes up the card.

2.  When I put the new card in, I format it IN THE CAMERA.  Not on my laptop.

This could all be coincidence, but I haven't had any issues with errors or corrupted cards since I did that.  Oh, one other thing.  Most SD cards have a little sliding switch on them that write protects them.  In my cams, if that is accidentally switched on, I usually get a warning when I load it in the cam (can't access SD card or something like that)...but take a look and see if that's an issue as well.

If you can't delete them on a computer try using a handheld card reader or visa versa. It happens sometimes and I don't have the technical knowledge to know the cause. Sometimes the card needs to be reformatted in a computer. Try that first before buying a new card. I have had to do that a few times as well. I run Cuddebacks, Moultrie, and Primos cams all at the same time and swap out the same cards.

Good info! Thanks! How do you format an SD card?

If u have a windows computer that has an sd card slot, insert the card and it will show up as a drive. Right mouse click on that drive and you will see the option to format. Do the long format, not the "quick" format.

In mine (moultrie), there is a menu option called "memory" and then "erase all images".  It's not called Format.   You can do the long format on your PC like the others have suggested, but I seem to get better results if I do it in the camera itself....
