I was trying to locate an answer to a question. Thought the helpful folks here may have an answer. Is it legal to place a 55 gallon drum on state forest land for my bear bait? I would absolutely remove it after the hunt. I just wanted to know if its legal to chain it out now in advance of the season on state forest land. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know if you can legally do it or not, but I heard from others that did it that they had other hunters sitting near their bait can every day.  It's a big advertisement for others to see.  I'd try to hide it without a barrel.  Under logs, in a hole, or between rocks, .  Far from a road, and in a spot where other hunters won't be scouting.

Good input from folks.  Putting a barrel on state land is akin to putting a neon sign with an arrow pointing to the spot that says "Bears here".  You won't be able to prevent anyone else from hunting over your spot because it's public land.  Keep that in mind.  Public means anyone can hunt it, so keep that in mind before putting a lot of work into your spot.

Sapere aude.

Audeamus.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

Don't put a barrel out on public land you're just asking other hunters to jump into your spot, use what is in the woods.

Here is my set up, collect as much logs, and branches as you can, stack them up and make a "V",  have it set up giving you a broadside or quartering away shot, with your bait of choice in the middle, then cover with remainder of logs, and branches. if all goes well the bear will enter at the widest opening, or  the bear will be busy clearing the logs/branches to get to the bait, this will give you time to set up for your shot
