Craigslist Find

I'm planning on doing the Moose River Bow trip in Maine solo next May. For the last 15 years my primary canoe has been an Old Town Penobscot 17. It's a great canoe but tough for one person to paddle because of a thwart mounted right behind the bow seat. If I'm by myself I kneel in front of that thwart but on a three day loop it may be a bit much. So I was looking for something a little shorter that's able to be paddled backwards. I found this 15' Wenonah Heron on Craigslist. The asking price was $500 and it came with 5 Paddles (3 bentshaft, 2 beavertail) and a cane seat back. When I went to look at it it was pretty dirty and full of leaves and debris. I offered $350 and they took it. I brought the boat home, pressured washed it and then went over it with a sponge and car wash soap. It's in nearly new condition. The Heron is in TuffWeave currently sells for $2500 and two of the paddles are brand new Mitchells made in NH that sell for $165 each. It only weighs 50 lbs so it's 15 lbs lighter than my Old Town and better for solo portaging. My wife and I took it out on Furnace Lake and couldn't be happier with it.

I have the Royalex one, very nice.  That looks like an interesting trip.

The tough part is the first day. The wind is usually out of the west and gets squeezed between those two mountains.  It has plenty of time to build waves before reaching the eastern shore. My game plan will be to be on the water before dawn and hug that northern shore if the wind is blowing.
