7/21/17 - 2017-2018 Deer Regulation Sets

Recommended Posts

Bummer, QDM still in place for Zone 3.  And the antlerless harvest is one per bow season.  I think they got the message that the deer numbers and quality are down in Zone 3.

I still cannot fathom why people think QDM works.  It cannot, there is no way it can.  If you want QDM to work, you would need to put a limit like "no deer with greater than 3-points on one side can be harvested".  That would protect mature deer and good genetics.  The spikes and forks would be removed from the herd while protecting the others.  But that too would have the unintended effect of harvesting younger bucks.  So either way you approach it, antler restrictions are an ineffective way to promote better genetics in the herd and higher quality trophy bucks.

Don't believe me, hunt zone 3.  It's the most poorly managed herd/zone in the state.

I've never hunted Z3 so I'll take your word for it, but you're right about antler restrictions.  They do not have the intended result

They have stated that ARs are implemented for political reasons and not scientific reasons.  The biologist know that they don't work but they implement them to appease the hunters.

What would work?  Honest question (not an argument)... I guess age restrictions (which would be impossible to enforce)?

They're starting to address it, albeit slowly.

Antlerless harvest is down to one per season (season being bow, permit bow, etc.) so that should help numbers rebound.  They need to cut down buck harvests to two per year over ALL seasons.  Drop the QDM facade.

This will ensure a stronger herd, and with more fighting bucks out there, the dominant bucks will breed and the wimpy ones will not be able to spread their genes as easily. By wiping out big bucks you're ensuring that crappy genetics get passed along.  The herd needs to rebound in numbers and quality, and the only way you can do that is by protecting mature bucks by limiting their harvest numbers.  It's not what people want to hear, but it is the best way to increase the quality of the herd.

As an example, in the other states with superior buck quality, I am guessing that they have a very limited buck harvest limit--possibly only one buck per year.  And the reason they're seeing better bucks there is because the real bruisers have an opportunity to survive, fight for does, and spread their genes around.

I was at a hunter safety meeting on Wednesday and a rep from F&G reviewed the regulation changes, which included the elimination of EAB.  Copies of the revised Reg Sets were available for everyone at the meeting.  I can see why there is so much confusion on this.

Limit the number of buck tags.  Shoot what you want, but once you do you are done.

Looks like it was taken down.

I saved the link:  http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/pdf/2017/regsets17-18.pdf

Their nerds aren't good enough to keep that data from me.
