Dogs and bird hunting.

Recommended Posts

I like all hunting. I don't dare say "I've done it all". Hunting with a dog is special.  Our friend and my nieghbor Ghost Bear just lost his dog..Let's discuss special dogs that we have known, owned, or hunted with. My friends have had or have some great dogs. TJC comes to mind, Ive owned some great Springers. My current English Setter does not suck at all. Let's hear some stories and/or see some pics.

I've been lucky enough to hunt over Attila. I recently adopted an abused gsp, Lucky, about 6 months ago. I've hunted him a handful of times and am really pleased with his progress. I've also joined NAVHDA which is full of great people to help you learn to train your dog. As my first dog I'm probably a little biased but this guy is special.

Attila was more to me then just a dog or even a hunting partner, he was my rock, he kept me sane when my ex decided she no long wanted to be married, he's been there keeping me sane when I was struggling to land the right job, and when things got unbearably difficult, he was there with tail wagging ready to lay on the love. I miss him like no other.

He was a good hunter, not polished to say the least, I could never get him to bring birds back, and he always broke on the shot, but when he hunted, he was a machine. He listened well in the field and has never let me down, not even when he misbehaved, it only made me love him more.image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

Hunt with a Vizsla, cause life's to short to hunt with an ugly dog! :D RIP Tilly monster. (Attila) 2004-2017.

TJC.....Wow, talk about hunting with great dogs! I killed lots of birds with Tommy at Flatbrook WMA's. Even was able to get some hunts on video, we always found birds after guys left for the day.

I am sure we probably hunted next to each other up there a time or two. PM sent. Great post.

My pride & Joy, Maizy Jane Bumpyhead, but you can call her Maizy. I know you are never supposed to brag about your kids or your dog, but I will make an exception. She's mostly English pointer with some setter mixed in, guys in Virginia call them droppers. She only hunts turkeys in the fall, that is what she was born & bred to do. Quite a handful in the house, but ALL business when we head for the woods. She's only 2, so her best years are still ahead of her, if she can stay accident free (she has no fear and knows no boundaries when she is looking for birds). She is the first bird dog I ever owned & trained, but my father always had bird dogs when I was growing up. We are planning a trip out west this fall, hoping to complete a fall turkey Grand-Slam, already counting down the days!!! :D

Dogs don't care how much money you have, how big your house is, what kind of car you drive, what kind of job you work or if you work at all. All they want is a little bit of your time and they're eternally grateful.  There is no purer love than that of a dog.  I've been blessed to have many dogs in my life.  3-4 years ago I bought my first GSP after hunting over them as a kid.  Remi, like Atilla, is far from polished.  She breaks on the shot, doesn't bring bird backs, but if there is a bird in that field you had better believe that she's going to find it and point it until I'm ready for the shot.  I wouldn't trade that dog for the best, most polished hunting dog out there.

truer words have never been uttered.

Last season would've been his last, as old as he was, and he never lacked in my time love and affection, my girlfriend also adored him and spoiled him to no end, I know she misses him too.

I need still to repair the injury in my neck and solve another issue or two, but I hope to have another Vizsla in my life sooner than later.

A good friend of mine, had an English Setter, long before I met Attila, nearly all white save for a small brown patch over one eye, his name? Brownie naturally! That dog got me into bird hunting, it was over him at whittingham where I shot my first ever pheasant, and I powder puffed it to boot, I remember on hunt where there was 5 of us, it was my turn to shoot and brownie finds a bird, the bird heads for the edge of the field but stops, brownie re set on the bird, and I go for the flush, bird goes up and I lose it in the sun, I hear Carlos yell "Shoot,Shoot!" I say I can't see it, then all hell breaks loose as 4 guys empty out on it, then I see it and send out two, as we all watch in astonishment as it flies away un hurt!! Brownie is still at my side sitting there watching, I look at him and say well? Looks like we missed. I swear to this day that dog tossed his head and rolled his eyes at me in utter disgust as if to say, " ok morons I'll go find another one for you to miss!" Lol.

Rowdy was a better hunter than I am. He was smarter than I am. He was the physical runt of his litter, but I never had a dog with as much heart and drive in the fields and waters.

Memories of him include seeing the fur on his face saturated with blood from flushing pheasants out of the stickers, and crying for me to send him back in. That was the norm.

Brain cancer quickly took him at the age of 7.
