Muzzleloader Loads, What Is In Your Barrel?

BHC

Recommended Posts

I use two pellets and 250 grain Shock Wave in my TC fx. AT 100 yards I group 3 inches and I took down a deer last year at 160 yards. This upcoming season I am going to 3 pellets to increase my range since I have long shot opportunities on the farm.

Out of my Triumph and Black Diamond I use Hornady .240 grain XTP .45 caliber jacketed hollow points (normally used for pistol reloading), Harvester  crush rib sabots and 80 grains of 777 loose powder.  I get clover leafs with the Black Diamond at 100 yds. I  only get about 2" groups with the more expensive Triumph. I think it is because of the "Flame Thrower" ignition on the BD. The cost of the pistol bullets and sabots is significantly less that the "packaged for muzzleloading" bullets.

In my Traditions flint lock 1:32 twist I get a 3" group with open sights at 50 yds. At 25 yds the elevation is zero; at 50yds I hold over about 8". This with 60 grains of black powder and patched sprued round balls. I have some swaged .495 round balls, but I haven't tried them in that gun yet. I plan on hunting with it this fall

In My Bell-Perc Hawken cap lock I shoot 60 or 70 grains of black powder with Buffalo Ball-ets. With the 1:60 twist the groups are not as good as the flintlock. The Hawken gets better groups with patched .495 swaged round balls, but the Ball-ets are very easy to load.

110 grains Blackhorn 209 behind a Barnes TEZ 290 grain bullet in a Harvester short black sabot, ignited by a Winchester 209 primer in a  shimmed breech plug, out of my original Knight DISC rifle converted to an enclosed breech plug. Shoots 3 shot groups into one hole at 100 yards, dead on at 155 yards.

Depends on which Rifle I decide to choose.

.45 cal Hawken 128 Gn PRB = 50 - 110 Gn  2F

.45 Cal Hawken 320 Gn Bullet = 70 - 100 Gn 2F

.50 Cal Hawken 175 Gn PRB =  50 - 110 Gn 2F

.50 Cal Hawken 470 Gn Bullet = 70 - 100 Gn 2F

.50 Cal Scout Carbine 320 -370 Gn Bullet = 100 Gn 2F

.56 Cal Renegade SB  250 Gn PRB - 80 - 100 Gn 2f

.56 cal Renegade SB. 7/8 - 1 OZ #6 Lead Shot - 80 Gr 2F

For:

Deer = 80 Gn 2FFG

Bear = 100 Gn 2FFG

Depends on distance expect to make contact with critters.

I like Patched Round Ball, can take game in North America.

Small game: #6 or #7 Shot. (28 Ga shotgun)

Ephesians Chapter 6:12

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Joshua Chapter 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

IMO and many Ballistic Tests.  Look up Dutch Schultz The Godfather of Modern Black Powder.

Fact Black Powder burns Slow the length of the barrel and bullet WT, determines the Powder Charge. if you use more powder than can Burn in the Lenth of the barrel it just fires Out and producing no more velocity.   My 36" loaded 90 GR and was Round Ball only.  Put in 100 Gr and the powder was wasted.

Black Powder Patch and Ball is a science and takes many rounds to determine the best results.

What is the flash point between Blackhore  and Hercules Black Powder Pyrodex is not even used in Competition or allowed in PA Traditional shooting ( Hunting )

I will bet that 120 gr Blackhorn is overload.  And can be determined with an Easy Test.

The Rifle and the ones before that I owned and shot in Competitions in PA were all Built at Dixon Muzzle Loading PA and all were Cap Patch Round Ball ONLY.

Blackhorn is the cleanest propellant I have ever used....You can shoot all day at the range and clean the barrel to a mirror finish after only a few swabs using water only.

My son is using my Black Diamond inline using Jim Shockey Gold powder which is clean shooting as well. But nothing in my experience is like the Blackhorn.

Love that stuff!
